By: Olivia Butzin For centuries the nativity has been found in churches, houses, and other places around the world at Christmas time. The appearance of a nativity can give us a chance to remind ourselves about the true meaning of Christmas. Do you want to know where it started and why? The first nativity set was made by Saint Francis of Assisi on Christmas Eve 1223 in Greccio, Italy. He made it out of hay, and Saint Francis thought that the meaning of Christmas was being lost. He thought that if he made the nativity, it would symbolize that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, and not about the gift giving. A usual nativity shows the holy family, the angels, the three wise men, donkeys, sheep, camels, and an assortment of villagers. The oldest nativity is preserved in Bologna, Italy. It dates back to the 13th century. The people are practically life size and made of plaster. The word nativity is also said as “presepe”. The word “presepe” comes from the Latin word “praesepe”, which plainly means “crib”. This means that when we say the word “nativity”, we are really talking about Jesus’ miraculous birth! The nativity comes in lots of different sizes and versions. Nativity sets can be as big as lego, barbies, or the nativity in Bologna, which is the size of actual people. Nativity sets can be found in yards, parks, stores, homes, churches, and so many more places. Nativities are made African-American, or American. Nowadays we seem to also lose focus about what Christmas is really about. We spend all of our time thinking about giving and receiving gifts, rather than about Jesus’ birth and life. Make it your goal this year to buy a nativity in order to regain sight of the true meaning of Christmas. The oldest nativity in Bologna, The usual household nativity. Italy.
