1 Green Alliance is a charity, independent think tank and advocate, committed to achieving a greener future. The UK government has set an ambitious target to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, it is clear that the current plan will fall short of this target without a step change in government action. Strong, cross party support for increased ambition will be vital to achieving that. Despite public support for environmental action being at an all-time high and the solutions now clearer than ever, more political leadership and parliamentary support is needed to turn ambitions into action. We are looking for an outstanding political adviser to join our growing politics team to help us bring parliamentarians and senior government advisers on board with the goal to decarbonise the economy and reverse nature decline. You will need exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to understand complex issues and convey them in simple yet persuasive terms. Your role in directing and co-ordinating the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Environment (APPGE), will give you the opportunity to build the profile of the group and develop cross party influence in an important year for environmental action, in the run up to the UK hosting the Glasgow climate summit (COP26). You will also work on Green Alliance’s broader climate advocacy programme, working with parliamentarians, government advisers and NGO partners to identify and achieve policy wins towards the decarbonisation of the UK economy. You will need to be highly organised and a capable multi-tasker, with exceptional project planning and management skills. You will need the ability to think on your feet, manage multiple senior relationships and conduct advocacy concurrently. Experience of political processes or working directly with politicians to achieve policy change would be a distinct advantage. An understanding of environmental policy would be welcome but is not necessary. 2 The political adviser reports to the head of politics. The post holder will also work closely with the chair of the APPGE and be supported by additional staff from Green Alliance. Allocation of time is expected to be sixty per cent on APPG activity. • To liaise with the chair and parliamentary officers of the APPGE and head of politics to agree the programme and strategy for the APPGE to maximise cross party support. • To prepare briefings and organise rapid response events on politically salient issues for the APPGE, using digital channels and social media to maximise this. • To support APPGE efforts to raise ministerial understanding of the net zero carbon goal and, in 2021, the Glasgow international climate summit. • To oversee governance and compliance requirements for the APPGE. • To grow and strengthen the parliamentary and external membership of the APPGE. • To support the implementation of Green Alliance’s political strategy, with a particular focus on short term policy wins to achieve long term decarbonisation of the UK’s economy. • To nurture and sustain Green Alliance’s relationships with decision makers in Westminster and Whitehall and use them to enhance the impact of our work, especially on tackling the climate crisis. • To support the delivery of Green Alliance projects to influence environmental policy, in particular those advancing government action on climate change. • To track issues and analyse their relevance to organisational objectives and the UK’s environmental agenda, with a particular focus on UK decarbonisation policy. • To write (or ghost write for senior staff, partners and allies) briefings, articles and other content. • To contribute to strategic and project planning processes and organisational development at Green Alliance. • To work with colleagues to develop new impactful, fundable projects to deliver ambitious leadership for the environment. • Any other task which may reasonably be requested to be undertaken within the scope of this post. 3 • Experience of working with a broad range of stakeholders, managing competing priorities and opinions. • Experience in supporting programme delivery, co-ordination and administration. • Track record of successfully influencing policy processes. • Understanding of UK’s political landscape and processes, eg parliamentary questions, amending legislation, select committee processes, etc. • Affinity for working in a small team and being responsive to new opportunities. • Experience of working with APPGs, politicians and political advisers, or senior decision makers, in a political context. • A broad understanding of UK and global environmental policy, particularly on climate change. • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and networks with a wide variety of stakeholders. • Highly organised multitasker. • Good project planning, prioritisation and delivery skills. • Excellent drafting and writing skills. • Ability to work as part of a team. • Strong influencing and advocacy skills. 4 Green Alliance is committed to achieving positive outcomes for the environment. Green Alliance’s unique role on environmental policy and politics is more important now than it has ever been. We are helping the environment sector in the post-Brexit era through our work steering the Greener UK coalition. We provide space for new thinking and offer credible policy solutions to major challenges such as decarbonisation and plastic pollution. Our Climate Leadership Programme is working with MPs to raise political ambitions in parliament. Under our Cutting Carbon Now project we are advocating the immediate actions needed across the economy to achieve net zero carbon emissions and is promoting ambitious UK leadership of the Glasgow COP26 climate conference. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, we are pushing for an economic recovery that ensures a resilient, green economy. We are happy to consider flexible working arrangements. Salary band: £28,000-£35,000 starting salary will be commensurate with experience. Start date: Not fixed, but we would prefer the successful candidate to start within two months of accepting an offer. Location: Green Alliance's office is in central London and is fully accessible. Our staff are currently working at home and will continue to do so until further notice. We will provide IT hardware and other equipment required to work at home but you will need good internet access. Hours: 35 hours per week with some flexibility; the post holder would be expected to work occasional evenings for time off in lieu. Holiday: 25 days per year in addition to statutory holidays and the period between Christmas and New Year.
