Hong’s extensive study and analysis of the Chen classic text, the forms and of the push hands applications of the First Routine (Yilu) and Second Routine (Erlu) concluded that execution of some movements were beneficial to the translation from form to application of the Chen style Taijiquan. Demonstrating his findings, Chen Fake commented that the forms were “Practical”. Hence the adoption of the name “Practical Method” of the Chen style Taijiquan (also called Hong’s system). Chen Fake assured Hong that the forms were essentially the same as his own, and encouraged Hong to concentrate on the principles instead of the outer appearance. For by 1956, Chen Fake himself had already changed the outer appearance of his forms, including some sequences, previously taught to his disciples before 1944. Chen Fake stated: “This [Practical] set of Taijiquan does not have one movement which is useless. Everything was carefully designed for a purpose”. Hong said that the best way to test whether a certain technique is to put it into practice in push hands. Born in 1961 in Shandong Province, Chen Zhonghua studied English at the Foreign Languages Department of Jinan, and studied Chen style Taijiquan Practical Method with Grandmaster Hong Junsheng at Black Tiger Springs in Jinan. Chen Zhonghua, became a disciple of Grandmaster Hong Junsheng, and in 2004 was nominated by the Hong family, by the Chinese Standard Bearer Li Enjiu, and by a group of Hongs most senior disciples to become the International Standard Bearer. Master Chen Zhonghua promotes the Chen style Taijiquan Practical Method abroad with his own school, and with workshops in North and South-America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Aided by his perfect knowledge of English and Mandarin, he is very a sought after teacher by the serious student of Taijiquan. Workshop content Basic Foundations: Detailed explanations of required stance — measure of weight used on each leg — position of elbow and hands in the Positive and Negative circle — action required by elbow for movement towards the Dan Tian — action of hand required for outgoing action — function of drawing the shoulder down in the action of the three way split– use of the kua to guide the alignment to the foot—non movement of the knee and its impact on the transmission of power. Concepts and principles: the meaning of “Double weighted” (the explanation in the Chen style Taijiquan Practical Method is different from other styles) and the way to solve this problem — the concept of “Tossing” of the body — the concept and impact on power transmission of “No protrusion, no indentation”- The differences between “revolution and Self Rotation” — the leverage point or fulcrum that enables effortless push hands — how the movements of the form (Yilu and Erlu) can be directly used in push hands applications without changes (indicating the Practical nature of the forms)- the concept of “Full”- the concept of Vertical movement as opposed to Horizontal movement (as found in ALL other styles) Other matter covered: Stances– stepping-push hands exercises– the first 13 movements of the Yilu. Other: This workshop IS NOT a detailed instruction course for the Yilu (First routine). You will not be taught the Yilu in detail. It is not necessary, nor it is a requirement for you to know the Yilu. But you will of course benefit much more if you know the Yilu. Master Chen Zhonghua’s tuition is VERY hands-on. He allows students to touch his body so that they can feel what is going on, where the power is distributed, what parts do move/ do not move, what parts rotate, where the alignment is originating from, etc... As some of the movement concepts are foreign to students who have never encountered the Chen style Practical Method, the explanation of the words together with feeling how the movement occurs can definitely open up the door to a deeper understanding. Private sessions Those students who attend the workshop can receive further instructions in a more private setting. Option 1: 30 minute form correction sessions with Master Chen Zhonghua. If you already know some, or all, of the routine, and you want to take knowledge to the next level, this one-on-one session is for you. Option 2: One hour sessions for groups of four (4) students taught by Master Chen Zhonghua. This is for those students want to learn practical applications of the Chen style Taijiquan. By working in a small group, Master Chen Zhonghua teaches by demonstrating, guiding, and by showing what to look out for, how to move, how not to move, etc… These sessions take your level of understanding to a whole new level.
