Travel details for walk routes C 01 to C 11 All these locations are best approached from the A170 that runs between Helmsley and Pickering (a distance of 12 miles). C 03, C 04, C 05 From Helmsley, head towards Pickering on the A 170 for 4 miles; just after a cross-roads (Kirkdale, Welburn), look for a road on the left to Fadmoor and turn left. After 2½ miles, turn left at T-junction and shortly right for half a mile to Gillamoor (C 05). Continue for a further 1 mile; just beyond a turning on the left to Low Mill, look for a small unsigned car park on the left near Lowna (C 03, C04); if you reach Lowna Bridge you have passed the entrance. If the car park is full, there may be space beside a track to the left just past the bridge. Other walk routes are best approached from further along the A170 but, from Lowna, continuing for 1 mile then turning right for half a mile brings you to Hutton-le-Hole from which other walks may be reached. From Pickering, head towards Helmsley and Thirsk on the A170 for 6 miles. Turn right onto a road to Hutton-le-Hole and the Ryedale Folk Museum. After 2½ miles enter Hutton-le-Hole. At the far end of the village, keep left uphill for ½ mile then turn left for 1 mile downhill to Lowna Bridge. A further 200m (beyond a bend to the left), look for an unsigned car park entrance on the right: the starting point at Lowna for routes C 03 & C 04. Continue, keeping left, for 1 mile to Gillamoor village: the starting point for C 05. A longer alternative from Helmsley, follow the A170 for 6 miles (¾ mile beyond the Kirkbymoorside roundabout) turn left to Hutton-le-Hole and Ryedale Folk Museum. After 2½ miles enter Hutton-le-Hole then as from Pickering above. C 06, C 07 , C 08 From Helmsley, head towards Pickering on the A170 for 6¾ miles and turn left towards Appleton-le-Moors. From Pickering, head towards Helmsley and Thirsk on the A170 for 5¼ miles and turn right towards Appleton-le-Moors. Continue for 1¾ miles into Appleton-le-Moors village (starting point for C 08). Continue for about 1¼ miles to a junction where the main road bends left. Take the road straight on for about half a mile into Lastingham village (starting point for C 06, C07). An alternative route to Lastingham (for C 06 & C 07) is via Hutton-le-Hole. At the end of the village, turn right and follow the main road for 1¼ miles and keep left for a further ½ mile to Lastingham C 10 From Helmsley, head towards Pickering on the A170 for 8¼ miles and turn left into Sinnington village. From Pickering, head towards Helmsley and Thirsk on the A170 for 3¾ miles and turn right into Sinnington village. Park beside the Village Green where a donation of £1 per car is expected. This is the starting point for walk C 10. C 01, C 02, C 09, C 11 From Helmsley, head towards Pickering on the A170 for 10 miles and turn left towards Wrelton, Cropton and Rosedale Abbey. From Pickering, head towards Helmsley and Thirsk on the A170 for 2 miles and turn right towards Wrelton, Cropton and Rosedale Abbey. Continue for 2½ miles to Cropton. Just past the New Inn, at a road junction with a triangular green, for walks C 09 and C 11 turn right into Cropton village. For walks C 01 & C 02, keep left at the road junction and continue for 5 miles to Rosedale Abbey. Entering the village, a road on the left to Hutton-le-Hole via Chimney Bank leads to the White Horse Farm Inn. Alternatively, keep right into the village and take the first turning on the right beside the Milburn Arms Hotel. The Milburn Arms is currently closed and there is a car park on the left behind the hotel. These are alternative starting points for walks C 01 and C 02. For walk C 09, park in the wide village street in Cropton. For walk C 11 continue through Cropton for half a mile to a bend in the road, then continue for 1¼ miles (just past a slight bend to the left) to a small entrance on the left that leads to the Cawthorne Roman Camp car park. There is a sign that is sometimes obscured by leaves. The car park is the starting point for route C 11. It is also possible to get to Lastingham (for routes C 06 & C 07) by keeping left at the Cropton road junction and after about ¼ mile immediately after Cropton Bridge, turn left to Lower Askew (just over ½ mile) and right for 1 mile to Lastingham. An alternative route to Rosedale Abbey for routes C 01 & C 02, drive to Hutton-le-Hole (as for C 03, C 04 & C 05 above). Leaving the village, turn right towards Lastingham and after ¼ mile, turn left for 3¾ miles across the moors and down Chimney Bank (passing the White Horse Farm Inn) into Rosedale Abbey. Over a narrow bridge, turn left (but not sharp left) and take the first road on the right beside the Milburn Arms. Places suitable for lunch on a Sunday (check to see whether meals are served at lunchtime on weekdays) Gillamoor – The Royal Oak Inn Lastingham – The Blacksmith’s Arms Appleton-le-Moors – The Moors Inn Sinnington – The Fox and Hounds Cropton – The New Inn Rosedale Abbey – The White Horse Farm Inn (Chimney Bank) .
