CONTB.iPORARY DOCUMENTS. This register has been compiled for the ose of recording Contemporary Documents received in the Bureau. Properly speaking, the description "Contemporary Documents" should be limited to those created or already in existence during the period mentioned in the terms of reference of the Bureau, that is to say, prior to the end of 1921. It was suggested by members of the Advisory Committee, however, that this category should be extended to include any document which was in existence prior to the establishment of the Bureau on the 1st January 1947, and that is the meaning which, in practice, is to be read into the term "Contemporary Documents" wherever it occurs, or in relation to the records of the Bureau. While many documents were presented singly, there were collections of various sizes; but whatever the nature, size or documentary content of any individual contribution, it was treated as a single item for the purpose of immediate registration, and recorded in this register, with a serial number preceded by the letters CD. (i.e. Contemporary Documents In addition to the registration and numbering of each Collection as a single contribution, the individual documents in those collections which comprise more than two, and in some cases three documents, are listed and numbered seriatim in an appendix to this Register, in appropriate groups or classifications determined by subject, period or other inherent relationship, each such collection being the subject of a separate appendix related to it by the registered number. In the result, some of the large collections, each registered in this Register as a single item, are represented in the appendices by numbered entries runnir cases, i .1 rta,195 s U List ox" other Repositories where Material dealing with the Movement for Independence, 1913-1921, and the period following the end of 1921, is deposited s- Mational Library of Ireland, Kildare St. Dublin.
