MEASURING TIME I. Questions and Answers: 1. Describe the way historians measure time. Historians measure time by labeling groups of years in different ways. 2. Define the words period, decade, century, era and millennium. Period- a division of time that is shorter than an era. 2 8/26/2017 MEASURING TIME Decade- a group or set of 10 years. Century- a group of 100 years. Era- a large division of time Millennium- a group of 10 centuries grouped together. MEASURING TIME 3. What is prehistory and why it is called that way? Prehistory is an era or time period in history. It is called that way because writing was not developed before this period. 5. History is divided in different periods: Prehistory, Ancient History and Modern History. 3 8/26/2017 MEASURING TIME 6. What is a calendar? A calendar is a system for arranging days in order. 7. How some cultures have developed their calendar in the past? Mention three examples. Some culture have developed their calendar based on nature, such as the cycle of the moon. For example, the Chinese and Jewish calendar base their months on the appearance of the new moon. Also, the ancient Egyptians based one of their calendars on the moon. MEASURING TIME 8. The current calendar is based in which two calendars? The calendar we use today is based on the Julian Calendar and the Gregorian Calendar. 9. Describe the Julian Calendar. The Julian Calendar was developed by Julius Caesar and started counting years at the founding of Rome. In the Julian Calendar a year had 365 ¼ days. 4 8/26/2017 MEASURING TIME The Julian Calendar added an extra day every four years; it was called a leap year. However, the calendar was not precise because it lost several minutes every year, which added up to about one lost day every 128 years. 10. Describe the Gregorian Calendar The Gregorian Calendar was developed by the Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 A. D., because the Julian Calendar was losing time. MEASURING TIME The Gregorian Calendar started counting years from the birth of Jesus and it was ordered that the days between October 4th and October 15th of that year, be dropped from the calendar. Also, the Gregorian Calendar includes the concept of leap year but it works only for centuries divisible by 400, like 1600 or 2000. 5 8/26/2017 MEASURING TIME 11. What other calendars are based on religious events? The Jewish Calendar and the Muslim Calendar are based on religious events. MEASURING TIME • Words like decade, century, millennium and era are concepts we use to describe how time passes by. Also, historians use these words as tools to organize the past and a way to think about history. 6 8/26/2017 DATING EVENTS AND USING TIME LINES After reading Dating Events and Using Time Lines from our textbook (pages 7-8), let’s observe the Time Line of Ancient Indian. In what year did the Aryans introduced Hindu ideas to India? When did the Aryans controlled northern India? The introduction of Hindu ideas to India was before or after the Aryans controlled northern India ? Why? DATING EVENTS AND USING TIME LINES Around what year did the Mauryan Empire’s Golden Age begin? Which dates and events on this time line give information about the Aryans? 7 8/26/2017 HOW TO CREATE A TIME LINE? Let us create a Time Line about the School Year. Guiding questions: • When did the school year started? • When does the semester or quarter end? • What big events will happen during the school semester? EXIT TICKET Historians often name periods in history after events, achievements and people who defined that time. • Examples: Stone Age, Industrial Age, Napoleonic Age, Victorian Age etc. What name would you give to the time we live in and why? 8 .
