In 2019, we celebrated record-breaking attendance, hundreds of in-person public programs and events, and the success of our FORWARD! capital campaign, which fueled the opening of Experience Oregon and the building of the research library’s Digital Production Lab. These are accomplishments worth recognizing, and we can be proud of so much that the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) was able to achieve thanks to your support last year. As we persevere through trying times, we are reminded of what matters: friends and family. OHS couldn’t ask for better friends and supporters than you, who allow us to inspire curiosity and advance knowledge now and into the future. You help us fulfill our mission to preserve our state’s history and make it accessible to everyone. There’s never a dull moment at OHS! Last year, field trips kept us on our toes as schools rushed to tour Experience Oregon. Visitors of all ages flocked to see this spectacular new permanent exhibit as well as original exhibits Many Shades of Being Darcelle: 52 Years of Fashion 1967–2019, Portland Psychedelic, and traveling exhibits Ladies & Gentleman: The Beatles! and Fighting for the Right to Fight: African Americans Experiences in World War II. The Oregon Encyclopedia celebrated its tenth year of being the authoritative digital resource for Oregon history. The Oregon Historical Quarterly continued to publish well-researched, compelling scholarship, and historians and knowledge keepers shared their perspectives on Oregon history through robust public programs throughout the year. Our Mark O. Hatfield Lecture Series moved to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall for its 21st year, and in the fall, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright kicked-off the 22nd season. The research library staff prepared for a massive move and renovation, and we unveiled the Digital Production Lab, where staff work each day to make collections, even those that are most fragile and oversized, available to all through the OHS Digital Collections website. The Oregon History Day competition was one of the best yet, with impressive statewide participation and Alan Zhou and Kyler Wang winning first place at the national contest for their powerful documentary Echo of Falling Water: The Inundation of Celilo Falls. Of course, none of this would be possible without the members, donors, foundations, visitors, and taxpayers that support our core programs. Thank you for putting the power of history into everyone’s hands! Best regards, Kerry Tymchuk William Valach Executive Director President, Board of Trustees 3 Volunteers It would be impossible for OHS to exist without the dedication of the over 170 individuals who support every aspect of our mission. Since 2012, Stephen has captivated the minds of students of all ages with his sense of humor, booming voice, and fascinating exhibit tours. He regularly mentors new docents, creates supplemental activity sheets for exhibits, and served on the curriculum advisory committee for Experience Oregon.
