August 2015 Just one hour from Shinjuku on the Odakyu line, a lantern event to light up the midsummer's night: Enoshima Lanterns 2015 Experience yu-suzumi, the Japanese pastime of enjoying a cool summer's eve. Throughout the month of August, the area serviced by the Enoshima Electric Railway (Odakyu Group) will be hosting the Enoshima Lantern Festival 2015. ◆ Enoshima Lanterns: a wondrous Japanese illumination Every night in August, the Enoshima area will be lit up with 1,000 Japanese lanterns (tou-rou), creating a magical mood. Enjoy yu-suzumi, the traditional Japanese pastime of a summer night's stroll. *Enoshima area: sixty minutes on the Odakyu line from Shinjuku; disembark at Katase-Enoshima Station ◆ Hase-Dera Temple to host the Hase no Akari event, a light festival, for the first time From August 22 through 30, Hase-Dera Temple will be hosting the Hase no Akari event, the first of its kind. Those who attend with a handheld Japanese lantern (chou-chin) can enter for free. Stroll the beautifully lit-up garden grounds. *Hase-Dera Temple: 20 minutes on the Enoden from Enoshima Station; disembark at Hase Station. 5 minutes' walk from there. ◆ Guests attending in yukata (cotton robe) or jinbei (short summer jacket and pants) are entitled to receive a special Enoshima Lantern tenugui (traditional hand cloth). In addition, there will be fireworks and displays of traditional kage-e (shadow pictures), along with other events. Details: 1.Enoshima Lanterns 2015 Summary: the Enoshima area is lit up in an enchanting display of 1,000 lanterns. Dates: August 1-31, 6:00 PM to 9:30PM (canceled in cases of rain) Location: Enoshima area (Enoshima Samuel Cocking-En, Enoshima Sea Candle, Enoshima-jinja Shrine, etc.) *Enoshima Samuel Cocking-en is open from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM (entrance closes at 7:30 PM) Hours are extended to 8:30 PM on August 13, 14, and 15 (entrance closes at 8:00 PM) Miscellaneous: The special hall beneath Enoshima Sea Candle will serve as a space to experience traditional kage-e shadow pictures. A presentation of "The Heavenly Goddess and the Five-Headed Dragon," a story which tells the history of Enoshima, will be presented with shadow pictures on August 29 and 30. Kage-e : Paper cutouts are illuminated to produce an enchanting display of shadows on a wall or paper screen. This is a traditional Japanese handicraft. Transportation: take the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku Station (60 minutes). Disembark at Katase Enoshima Station. 10 minutes' walk to the center of Enoshima from there. 2.Hase no Akari Summary: Stroll through an enchanting lantern display with a lantern in hand Dates: August 22-30, sunset to 8:00 PM (temple entrance closes at 7:30 PM) Location: Hase-Dera Temple Transportation: 1.
