American University One Hundred and Thirty-Ninth Commencement May 9, 2020 Dear American University degree candidates: Congratulations! American University trustees, faculty, staff, and alumni join me in celebrating the hard work and many accomplishments that brought you to this important day. We wish we could be sharing this momentous occasion with you in person on our beloved campus. While the world looks very different right now, we are still celebrating you and your achievements! During your time at AU, you learned from influential scholars, pursued internships in our nation’s capital, and engaged in service activities, clubs, organizations, and athletics—all while building cherished memories and making lifelong friends and being resilient to the challenges you’ve faced the last few months. Your leadership skills and contributions to society are more important now than ever before, and I am confident that your American University education has prepared you to be changemakers in the changing world and to become leaders in your chosen fields. Now, we welcome you into the larger AU community of more than 130,000 alumni living in all 50 states and nearly 160 countries. We cannot wait to see how you change the world. On behalf of AU’s trustees, senior leadership, faculty, staff, and alumni, we wish you all the best as you begin the next chapter of your life’s story, and we hope to see you again in December.
