Declaration of authenticity drawn up by Dr. Vittorio Preda - Expert Old Master Paintings Paris. Restoration carried out by Dr. Daniela Galoppi - Fine Arts of Sienne and Arezzo Oil on canvas, Height 200 cm x Width 152 cm (78.74 inc x 59.84 inc) GIOVANNI STEFANO DANEDI: Born in Treviglio in 1612, Giovanni Stefano Danedi is the most important exponent of a family of artists which includes, among others, his brother Giuseppe - three years older and also known by the nickname of Montalto - with whom he executed several works. Giovanni Stefano would have been in Milan, in the thirties of the seventeenth century, a pupil of Morazzone. And in fact, after the discovery of the Lamentation over Christ, today in the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, it is clear how his artistic beginnings are linked precisely to the influence of Morazzone and the youthful style of Francesco Cairo, evident in two canvases such as Herodias with the head of the Baptist (Milan, Civic Collections of Art of the Castello Sforzesco) and the Miracle of the mule (1645) in the basilica of Treviglio. Around 1648, after a short stay in Rome, his artistic language is updated in a decidedly baroque sense, as documented by the frescoes painted that same year in the presbytery of the Duomo of Monza. And to the new baroque language - which in Milan has its major reference points for Danedi in Pietro Nuvolone and Storer - he will adhere more and more in the following years, as shown above all by the spectacular frescoes of Villa Frisiani Mereghetti in 1 / 5 anticSwiss 29/09/2021 09:41:35 http://www.anticswiss.com Corbetta (1656), those of the sixth and seventh chapel on the right in the Certosa di Pavia (1671-1688) and the decoration of the seventeenth chapel and the dome of the Sanctuary of the Sacro Monte di Varallo. Qualitatively less relevant, however, the last works in the church of Santa Marta in Porlezza and in the basilica of Treviglio (the canvases with the cycle of S. Martino executed together with his brother Giuseppe between 1677 and 1682). Giovanni Stefano Danedi died in Milan in 1690. THE MYTH OF SANSONE: Samson belonged to the tribe of Dan. Samson the struggles and skirmishes between Danites and Philistines were continuous. God therefore chooses him to begin to free Israel from the dominion of the Philistines. Samson grows beautiful and strong; women like him a lot and he too is deeply attracted to them, particularly the philistines. His adventures begin when he falls in love with a Philistine maiden and demands that her parents ask her in marriage. On the way to the city of Timna, where the girl lives, a lion attacks Samson. Invested by the Spirit of the Lord, the young hero kills him with his bare hands. Going back to the animal's carcass the next day and on his way to the wedding ceremony, he discovers that among its remains there was a colony of bees, which he also tastes honey. The incident suggested a riddle to be submitted to the thirty young people attending the banquet for her marriage: "From the devourer the food came out, and the cake came out of the strong". If they can solve it within the seven days of the banquet, they will have thirty tunics and thirty robes; but if no one guesses the solution, then the Philistines will give the same to Samson. After three days of trying, the guests threaten the bride to set her and her father's house on fire if she does not convince her husband to explain the riddle. wife tormented her husband until he gave in and revealed the solution to the Philistines. On the seventh day, before sunset, the Philistines answer the riddle. Samson understands that he was duped and outraged by this behavior, however he keeps faith with the covenant. He then goes to Ascalon and obtains the thirty garments by killing and plundering as many Philistines. Later, when he returns to the girl, he discovers that her father, thinking that Samson had repudiated her, gave the girl in marriage to a young man who had attended the wedding. So Samson in revenge captures three hundred foxes, tied them by the tail two by two, inserts a torch in the knot, lights it and frees the animals in the Philistine fields and all the harvest is burned. The Philistines then set fire to the girl's house by burning it together with her father. Samson then carries out a massacre in the Philistine village: he kills the inhabitants by beating them against each other. He then retreats to a cave in the territory of Judah. The Philistines seek him in vain, while the fearful Israelites of the Philistines persuade Samson to be tied up to be handed over to the Philistines. As soon as the Philistines 2 / 5 anticSwiss 29/09/2021 09:41:35 http://www.anticswiss.com meet, he breaks the sturdy ropes that immobilize him, grabs a donkey's jaw and kills a thousand men. Due to his incredible strength he is recognized as the judge of Israel and will govern his people for twenty years. Love for a Philistine woman, Delilah, will be the cause of his death.
