Coquitlam UV Disinfection Project

Coquitlam UV Disinfection Project WATER TREATMENT PLANT CONSTRUCTION METRO VANCOUVER, working in cooperation with the City of Coquitlam, has undertaken a major water utility infrastructure project at the Coquitlam watershed to ensure the region will continue to have high-quality drinking water. The existing Coquitlam water treatment facilities have been upgraded and an ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection facility has been added in order to comply with new requirements under Health Canada’s Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. Construction of the Coquitlam UV Disinfection Facility commenced in spring 2011. This facility has been treating Coquitlam source water since early 2014. BACKGROUND Metro Vancouver supplies drinking water for our region. The source is rainwater and snowmelt, which is stored in the Capilano, Seymour and Coquitlam reservoirs. In order to protect water quality, these mountainous watersheds are closed to public access. The Coquitlam Watershed and its water treatment facil- ities provide approximately 370 million litres of potable water on an average day, or approximately one third of the total water supply delivered in the Metro Vancouver region. As part of Metro Vancouver’s Drinking Water Treatment Program, the water disinfection process was upgraded in 2000 to include ozonation as the primary disinfectant, in addition to the existing chlorination system. The Coquitlam UV Disinfection Facility complements the existing ozone and chlorination processes by improving primary disinfection. 1 1 900 800 150 200 1 1 14 00 00 0 0 130 120 0 0 900 0 1700 0 130 160 150 100 0 120 140 140 0 0 0 0 150 0 0 0 0 0 0 130 700 130 120 100 50 120 1 0 1 120 14 0 0 Coquitlam Wa00 tershed 0 0 0 6 0 1 Don LakeYoung Lake 100 1300 1200 1000 00 0 900 13 140 Joseph Lake 900 Little Anne Lake Anne Lake Disappointment Lake 0 12 60 800 0 0 900 800 0 0 140 70 0 100 140 500 120 0 800 0 0 160 1700 0 700 1200 140 90900 0 Norton Lake 130 0 150 0 0 0 0 140 6 0 150 00 300 900 1 1 1 1 600 00 100 0 0 0 130 160 Barnes Lake 1500 0 900 400 0 800 14 Pitt L. 800 900 Belknap Lake 700 150 200 13 0 0 0 100 0 160 14 0 100 0 0 0 0 140 150 300 1000 1400 180 0 180 100 27 1700 0 26 00 11 17 0 0 0 130 500 50 27 0 0 170 0 26 140 900 130 25 0 130 160 0 200 0 170 0 0 0 400 0 170 150 0 140 1 120 1 0 10 00 600 Consolation Lakes 160 1 150 400 0 1 0 0 130 140 00 0 24 140 0 0 140 10 0 0 1 900 120 0 0 130 400 300 0 400 900 150 700 200 0 0 0 0 120 0 0 100 17 500 130 0 1 170 900 900 1 0 00 900 23 170 0 Disc Lake 900 140 0 0 800 0 10 Obelisk Lake 300 500 0 Spindle Lake 0 120 22 0 170 120 700 100 600 0 0 170 0 0 0 0 1 7 120 1 120 500 700 150 800 00 0 0 120 800 800 140 0 21 900 160 120 0 0 0 120 0 0 19 19 0 140 0 0 0 00 19 130 120 11 22 1 300 20 1 120 20 1600 0 100 18 600 80 0 19 600 21 18 18 0 0 0 19 140 60 100 21 160 0 1 0 120 600 100 0 0 80 4 0 120 20 00 0 150 300 5 0 120 0 500 100 17 130 0 0 400 0 120 800 1100 700 130 0 16 Winter Lake 700 700 Peneplain Lake 900 900 00 11 120 200 Widgeon Lake 0 0 1 0 900 15 1 00 12 00 0 1 100 1 120 0 150 120 11 0 1 140 100 00 1 0 11 00 0 00 900 1400 800 0 14 100 1000 0 1 130 700 1 150 0 900 00 Perkins Lake 900 0 140 900 500 700 140 800 0 0 900 500 800 140 13 120 0 0 0 14 15 0 3 120 0 1 130 90 200 1 13 800 00 0 900 130 900 120 0 0 700 0 0 2 0 12 1200 700 120 1200 00 800 1 100 0 1 1 13 0 140 0 900 1 Clegg Lake 120 100 130 800 11 0 12 200 100 00 11 1 400 1100 1 1000 1200 900 11 1300 400 Indian Arm 10 0 600 800 Talus Lake Coquitlam L. 100 10 120 500 00 700 0 10 1 100 1 200 10 0 100 0 900 0 700 9 800 600 8 0 120 100 Gabbro Lake 600 0 0 500 4 800 1 600 700 1 1000 600 500 700 130 0 00 500 9 1100 400 00 700 600 800 900 11 900 1200 130 600 9 800 0 0 700 500 8 500 600 9 100 500 0 130 200 0 800 100 600 400 8 130 600 150 300 200 1400 0 7 130 8 300 0 0 120 0 0 100 1 4 100 400 1 120 00 1 0 7 300 1100 300 6 6 600 7 BENEFITS OF ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT ULTRAVIOLET, OZONE AND 8 500 0 6 700 7 0 Chlorine has been successfully used in drinking water 120 0 0 CHLORINATION DISINFECTION2 120 800 500 treatment for decades.
