The Bluejays clinched their eighth Missouri Valley Conference tournament title in 12 years with a record-setting run through the eight-team bracket. CU opened the tournament with a 6-0 drubbing of Eastern Illinois, in what would be the final match at Tranquility Park. The Jays’ tied their own tourna- ment record with six goals, seven assists and 19 points in the blowout. With the scene shifted to St. Louis, the Jays needed a come-from-behind effort to get by Southwest Missouri State in the semifi- nals. After SMS scored two minutes into the sec- ond half, the Jays rattled off three unanswered goals to secure a 3-1 victory over the Bears. CU then met up with Bradley in the championship match. Matt Jewett’s goal in the 61st minute of play proved enough for the Bluejays, as they out- shot the Braves 20-5 in the 1-0 CU victory. The Jays returned to the Northeast for a quarterfinal match with sixth- ranked Boston College. Ballouchy and Damien Westfield both scored two goals in a 6-2 pounding of the Eagles, helping them advance to their sec- ond College Cup in three seasons. The Bluejays were pitted against former coach Bret Simon and Stanford in the College Cup semifinals. Mike Tranchilla scored the first goal of the match, on a penalty kick in the 15th minute. The Cardinal scored the equalizer in the 50th minute. The match remained tied into overtime, when defender Joe Wieland made two spectacular team saves to pro- long the CU season. Stanford scored the game- winner with just two minutes remaining in the sec- ond overtime, ending CU’s season with an 18-4-2 record.
