He will continue to oversee football operations for the sports information office until his retirement. Marc Ryan, the number one assistant under Peterson since 1989, will serve as interim director while a search is conducted by the men's department and an appointment made January 1, 1994. "Bob has been an integral part of this department for nearly two decades," said Men's Director of Athletics Dr. McKinley Boston. "His many contributions during challenging times for this department have been significant and much appreciated. Bob is a real professional and will be missed." Peterson, 62, came to the University of Minnesota in 1975 after 10 years as the sports information director at St. Cloud State University. Prior to that, he taught English and Journalism for nine years at the high school level and also was a sports writer and sports editor. During his 28 years in the sports information profession, Peterson has received more than 20 citations for excellence in the field of publications from the College Sports Information Directors of America. A past president of CoS IDA, he was elected to that organization's Hall of Fame in 1983. While a high school teacher, Peterson received two Newspaper Fund Fellowships from the Wall Street Journal for excellence in teaching. He also won three Minnesota Newspaper Association awards when in that field in Greater Minnesota. Peterson attended Hamline University, received his B.S. degree from St. Cloud State University and his M.S. degree from the University of North Dakota. He also did post graduate work at Syracuse University under his Newspaper Fund Fellowship. He has been an active member of CoSIDA, the Football Writers of America and the Basketball Writers of America. Peterson also has been involved with the U.S. Olympic Committee as a press liaison officer during several Summer Olympic Festivals and the Pan American Games. Peterson is only the third full-time men's sports information director in University of Minnesota history. Les Etter became the first in 1930. Otis Dypwick assumed those duties in 1944 and held that position until Peterson joined the staff in 1975. Ryan came to Minnesota in '89 after two years on the staff at Villanova. Prior to that, he served as sports information director at Macalester College for two years. In addition, he worked as a press liaison at the 1987, 1990 and 1991 U.S. Olympic Festivals, the 1990 Goodwill Games, and the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. He is a 1984 graduate of Moorhead State University where he was a two-time All-American in track. Sime, is a native of Britton, S.D. where he won two state medalist titles for Britton High School. The Golden Gophers are coming off their finest season in 30 years. The Maroon and Gold won three team titles and placed in the top five in eight of the 13 tournaments they competed in and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1972, finishing 21st, which was the highest finish since1962 when the team finished ninth. Humphrey Metrodome. The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee made that recommendation today at a news conference that announced the recommended sites for the Men's Basketball Final Four in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. "We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to host one of the nation's premier sporting events by the NCAA Basketball Committee," said Director of Men's Athletics, Dr. McKinley Boston. "This event will once again provide the State of Minnesota and the University of Minnesota the opportunity to showcase some of the nation's best basketball."
