Gardner, Governor and Com- mander-in- Chief; , Sir:—l have the honor to submit to your Excellency, in compliance with the provisions of law, the Annual Report from this department for the year 1855, containing abstracts from the returns of the commanding officers of divisions, brigades, regiments, battalions and companies of the Active Militia; to- gether with abstracts from the returns of the clerks of the sev- eral cities and towns of the Commonwealth, exhibiting the numerical strength of the Enrolled Militia; also, tabular state- ments of the amount of ordnance, ordnance stores, equipments, &c., deposited in the Arsenal at Cambridge, under my care as Quartermaster-General, and of the ordnance deposited in the several cities and towns’of the Commonwealth, the authorities of which have given bonds for the care of the same. The following table exhibits the Enrolled or Inactive Militia, by counties and divisions, for the year 1855; also, a comparison with the year 1854, showing an increase of five thousand nine hundred and seventy-one (5,971) over the year 1854 : 6 ADJUTANT-GENERAL’S REPORT.
