GB0131 DD366 Tameside Local Studies and Archives This catalogue was digitised by The National Archives as part of the National Register of Archives digitisation project NRA 44660 The National Archives TAMESIDE LOCAL STUDIES AND ARCHIVES DD366 Tameside Tennis League 1936-1987 This collection (1 box) comprises a series of season handbooks / fixture lists for 1937, 1981-1987, a receipt book, publicity material and files of administrative papers including agendas and minutes, balance sheets, results and letters. The Ashton and District Tennis League was founded in 1929. It comprised about ten clubs from the townships of Ashton-under-Lyne, Dukinfield, Stalybridge, Mottram and Mossley. In the winter of 1933-34, the Stalybridge and District Tennis League was founded to cater mainly for new players who were not yet ready for league-standard tennis. The two leagues continued separately for two seasons, amalgamating in the winter of 1935-36, taking the title of the Ashton and District Tennis League. In its inaugural season, it consisted of eighteen clubs, twenty five teams, 804 registered members and 2,200 members in total.
