"AFRIKANERS ON THE WITWATERSRAND" 1886-1961 COLLECTION A FINDING AID UJ LIBRARY SPECIAL COLLECTIONS Updated: March 2016 1 INTRODUCTION DOCUMENTS The documents, stored on the Doornfontein Campus of UJ Library, specifically deal with the history of the Afrikaner on the Rand, 1886-1961. They supply information on the political, social, educational, religious and cultural activities of the Afrikaans community. The bulk of the documents are in Afrikaans. These documents consist of a wide range of diaries, private and official correspondence, reminiscences, biographical writings, manuscripts, annual reports of institutions, minutes of meetings and appendices, financial reports, speeches, etc. As may be deduced from the inclusive dates, material ranges from 1886 to 1961. In cases where bodies and societies still exist and material is still donated to the University on a regular basis, the date will continue to the 1990s. FINDING AID The original inventory was compiled for the former Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) Library's Rare Book Collection. The intention was not to index each separate record in the inventory – the time factor prohibited this and the collection was too extensive. Instead, the inventory highlights the essence of the collection and lists subjects under discussion, bodies, people who donated collections and correspondence with VIPs. The inventory does not, however, list each correspondent in the collection. There are indexing terms for the history of Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand, but please note that the whole collection reflects the history of these two regions and that it only refers to specific items entitled "the history of …" ___________________________ FINDING AID: AFRIKANERS ON THE WITWATERSRAND DESCRIPTION CONTAINER A A.G.
