The longevity of the “Met Am” is rivaled in this country only by the U.S. Amateur and Western Amateur. The original championship plate was donated by H.B. Hollins, with the condition that it be retired after three victories by representatives of the same club, a feat accomplished for Nassau Country Club by Findlay Douglas (two wins) and Jerry Travers. The subsequent trophy was a gift of then-MGA president Daniel Chauncey. The Met Amateur immediately set a lofty precedent for quality. Its first two winners, Herbert Harriman (1899) and Walter Travis (1900), also were that year’s U.S. Amateur champions. Two early rivalries — first between Travis and Douglas, then Travis and Travers — garnered national attention. In subsequent years the Met Amateur has been won by the likes of Jess Sweetser, Willie Turnesa, Ray Billows, Robert Gardner, Dick Siderowf, Frank Strafaci, George Zahringer III, Johnson Wagner, and Jerry Courville Sr. and Jr. — all top names in the history of amateur golf. Three Met Amateur champions, Zahringer III, Courville Jr. and Ken Bakst, have also won the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. The Met Amateur has always been played at match play, with only slight format changes over the years. It remains the Met Area’s most important amateur event — a demanding, sometimes grueling test of championship golf with the victor surviving multiple days of 36-hole competition. In 1890, Keller bought 477 acres at the foot of New Jersey’s Baltusrol Mountain, and in May of 1895 hired George Hunter to lay out a short nine-hole course there. Subsequently, a meeting was held in Manhattan at which the Baltusrol Golf Club was organized. Baltusrol’s original course was expanded to 18 holes prior to the 1898 season, then revised in 1905 to form Founded: what the club refers to as the “Old Course.” It hosted the 1895 1903 and 1915 U.S. Opens and 1904 U.S. Amateur. Course Opened: By 1917 the Old Course had become antiquated and 1922 overcrowded, so the club purchased the 146 acres over Architect: A.W. Tillinghast which the Old Course was laid out from Keller, and an Upper Course: additional 172 acres to the west. The following year, A.W. Par: 71 Tillinghast was hired to design two new courses on the Yardage: 6,839 property. He would finish four years later, in June 1922, a Course Rating: 74.7 few months after Keller’s death. Slope: 147 Those two courses have since hosted numerous national championships, including the 1936, 1954, 1967, 1980, and 1993 U.S. Opens, the 1926 and 2000 U.S. Amateurs, and the 2005 PGA Championship. The Upper Course was the site of the 1936 U.S. Open. In 2016, the Upper Course will host the PGA Championship. 112th Met Amateur Championship The Creek, Locust Valley, N.Y. Thursday-Sunday, July 31-August 3 Unpredictable weather brought on new challenges each day and stroke play result - ed in some of the toughest match ups en route to the finals. In the end, the battle came down to David Pastore of Griff Harris Men’s Club and Matthew Lowe of Colonial Springs. Pastore was 2-up at the 35th hole, where Lowe’s tee-shot, landing just a few feet from the hole, seemed like it would force a showdown on the final hole. In an unexpected twist, Pastore’s tee- shot rolled delicately into the hole, giving Pastore an unprecedented hole-in-one walk off victory to claim the Met Amateur title and end the Championship in dramatic fashion. ~Final~ David Pastore def.
