COLONEL TIMOTHY P. FRANZ Colonel Timothy “Chewy” Franz is the Commander, 318th Cyberspace Operations Group, 688th Cyberspace Wing, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. In this capacity, he leads more than 600 professionals across five squadrons and three detachments in the conduct of cyber warfare and Information Operations training, testing, tactics development, exercise planning, and cyberspace protection for Air Force and joint warfighters. He was previously assigned to United States Special Operations Command as that headquarters’ Liaison to United States Cyberspace Command. Colonel Franz began his career as an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Combat Crew Commander, Evaluator, and Instructor. In 1999, he expanded to the space and cyberspace communities and has since served at the squadron, Major Command, Air Staff, and Combatant Command levels. Among his achievements, he has had the honor of standing up the Air Force’s first cyber warfare tactics squadron, directing the service’s first global network defense exercise, BLACK DEMON, and serving as Chief of Force Development for Air Force Cyberspace Command (Provisional), where he co-led the establishment of the service’s new cyberspace operations career force. He commanded the 57th Information Aggressor Squadron, and later served as Chief of Cyberspace Operations in Afghanistan, where he led planning, coordination, and synchronization of cyberspace operations across the theater. Colonel Franz is a published author, and a graduate of both the Air Force Institute of Technology and the National War College.
