Dr. Goodluck Ofoegbu Prof. Oby Ofoegbu Banking Blessings Ministry San Antonio, Texas USA What We Will Learn Paul and Barnabas teamed for the gospel They helped develop church in Antioch Collaborated on the 1st Missionary Journey Won several converts Helped setup several churches Broke up abruptly Before a follow-up mission Acts 13 and 14; Galatians 1 and 2 Paul and Barnabas 2 How Saul and Barnabas Met (Based on Acts) Appear to have met in Damascus After Saul’s conversion Introduced Saul to apostles in Jerusalem Acts 9:26–27 Paul and Barnabas 3 Acts 9 (NIV) 26 When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. 27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus. Paul and Barnabas 4 How Saul and Barnabas Met (Based on Galatians) Saul visited Jerusalem with Barnabas 17 years after Saul’s conversion They worked together in Damascus Came to Jerusalem inter-ministerial meeting Between Saul’s ministry to the Gentiles And Peter’s ministry to the Jews Galatians 1:13–24; 2:1–2 and 6–10 Paul and Barnabas 5 Galatians 1 (NIV) 13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it. 14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. Paul and Barnabas 6 Galatians 1 (NIV) 15 But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus. Paul and Barnabas 7 Galatians 1 (NIV) 18 Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 I saw none of the other apostles–only James, the Lord's brother. 20 I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie. 21 Later I went to Syria and Cilicia. Paul and Barnabas 8 Galatians 1 (NIV) 22 I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23 They only heard the report: "The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy." 24 And they praised God because of me. Paul and Barnabas 9 Galatians 2 (NIV) 1 Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. 2 I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders, for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain. Paul and Barnabas 10 Galatians 2 (NIV) 6 As for those who seemed to be important– whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not judge by external appearance–those men added nothing to my message. 7 On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as Peter had been to the Jews. Paul and Barnabas 11 Galatians 2 (NIV) 8 For God, who was at work in the ministry of Peter as an apostle to the Jews, was also at work in my ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles. 9 James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. Paul and Barnabas 12 Galatians 2 (NIV) 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. Paul and Barnabas 13 Saul and Barnabas Alliance Saul was God’s chosen instrument To take the gospel to the Gentiles Barnabas teamed with Saul In the ministry to the Gentiles Met in Damascus Saul was the chosen “vessel” Barnabas was the “wise second boat” Acts 9:15; Galatians 2:9 Paul and Barnabas 14 Acts 9 (NIV) 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. Galatians 2 (NIV) 9 James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. Paul and Barnabas 15 Saul and Barnabas: Church at Antioch Started from “fragment” of Jerusalem church Barnabas arrived from Jerusalem to help Invited Saul to help Worked with the church for one year Travelled to Judea for a mission Returned to Antioch thereafter Disciples called Christians first at Antioch Acts 11:19–26 Paul and Barnabas 16 Acts 11 (NIV) 19 Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. Paul and Barnabas 17 Acts 11 (NIV) 21 The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord. 22 News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. Paul and Barnabas 18 Acts 11 (NIV) 23 When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. Paul and Barnabas 19 Acts 11 (NIV) 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch. Paul and Barnabas 20 Saul and Barnabas: Famine Relief in Judea Travelled to Judea to provide famine relief Returned to Antioch church after the mission With John, also called Mark Acts 11:27–30 and 12:25 Paul and Barnabas 21 Acts 11 (NIV) 27 During this time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them, named Agabus, stood up and through the Spirit predicted that a severe famine would spread over the entire Roman world. (This happened during the reign of Claudius.) Paul and Barnabas 22 Acts 11 (NIV) 29 The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea. 30 This they did, sending their gift to the elders by Barnabas and Saul. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. "We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God," they said. Paul and Barnabas 31 Acts 14 (NIV) 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.
