ITALICATESSEN WINE CATALOGUE 2021 01 PIEMONTE The home of Barolo and Barbaresco (made using the Nebbiolo grape), Barbera and Dolcetto. The region also offers lighter and sparkling wines like Moscato D’Asti, Brachetto and a beautiful white wine called Gavi made from Cortese grape. Most of the wines of Piedmont come from the Langhe sub-region and its misty hills. The land is overlooked by the Alps, in fact Piemonte in Italian the name Piedmont means “at the foot of the mountain”. The largely red wines are powerful and muscular, but like the Burgundy there is also enormous elegance and finesse in the good producers. The whites are elegant with considerable backbone. FIGLI LUIGI ODDERO Figli Luigi Oddero is one of the top producers of Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera. The winery dates back to the 18th century. Just over half of the 35-hectare Oddero vineyards produce Nebbiolo for Barolos and Barbaresco. These award-winning wines consistently perform well in tastings and with good reason. There is real finesse and depth and a beguiling sense of terroir. These are serious Italian wines that make any list stand out as being prestigious and well-sourced. It was accredited with DOC status in 1970, and DOCG status followed in 2008. The region benefits considerably from coastal influences. Production is on twenty-six hectares of Cortese vines. The Gavi area is rich in biodiversity, with woods surrounding the vineyards and wild animals free to roam. La Mesma, owned and run by three sisters, believes great wine is based on the fruit, obtained with gentle, hands-on farming practices. Facing the Ligurian Sea on the Southern coastal area and surrounded by mountains on the Northern side, Liguria’s orography strongly influences the Liguria agriculture and viticulture of the region. Since most of the vineyards are located on steep slopes degrading down to the sea, a hard manual work is required and the grape harvest is still carried out by hand, carrying the baskets full of grapes out of the vineyards on the shoulders. This is why the viticulture in Liguria is defined “heroic”. Due to the challenging environment, the focus is on the quality of the wines rather than the quantity. Wines such as Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese and Ormeasco from the Riviera Ligure di Ponente are acclaimed and highly appreciated for their unique and distinctive organoleptic properties. This area is characterised by a mild microclimate, where a sea breeze gently blows. Cascina Praie’ produces high quality wines including Pigato, Vermentino, Granaccia and Rossese protected by the appellation Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC alongside other typical WCP001 WCP002 WCP006 WCP008 Ligurian wines such as Lumassina IGT delle Colline Savonesi, still produced with the traditional ancestral method.
