E. Bagley in 1902. It was composed on a train during a tour with a travelling band. The band performed the march at the next concert, and it was very successful, and it has been popular ever since that time. John Philip Sousa once referred to National Emblem as one of the three most effective street marches ever written. The eminent conductor, Frederic Fennell, called the piece “as perfect as a march can be”. The march was first recorded by Arthur Pryor’s Band in 1908, and it was recorded again by the United States Marine Band in 1914, It remains one of the best known and most popular marches today, with its musical quotes from the Star Spangled Banner, and its well-known and recognizable second strain which is popularly sung with the words “and the monkey wrapped his tail around the flagpole”. About the Composer Edwin Eugene Bagley was born in Craftsbury, Vermont in 1857. He began his musical career at the age of nine as a vocalist and comedian with a traveling entertainment group that toured many of America’s larger cities. He began playing the cornet, and continued touring with the same group for six more years. Following this he played with an orchestra in New Hampshire. In 1880 he went to Boston where he played with several different groups, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Today he is best known as a composer of marches – especially National Emblem. Bagley died in Keene, New Hampshire in 1922. About the Arranger Robert E. Foster is on the music faculty of the University of Kansas, where he served as Director of Bands from 1971 to 2002. An active composer and arranger, he has written successful publications for groups at all levels. He is Past-President of the American Bandmasters Association and the National Band Association, and he serves as Vice President of the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
