A summary of these code sections is contained in this notice. Further explanation regarding these laws may be requested of any school administrator. A signature form will be provided by your child’s school as well as a printable version that is available at the end of this packet. To help your student’s school maintain accurate records, one form should be completed for each student in your family. The school may also require your signature on other forms, which pertain to school rules and regulations. Please sign all such forms. When you sign the signature form, you are acknowledging that you have read the following information, and therefore, been informed of your rights. Your signature does not indicate that consent to participate in any particular program has been given or withheld. Parents are encouraged to review the contents of this packet with their children and retain this information for future reference. Any questions or concerns regarding school rules should be addressed to the principal. TUSD schools remain among the very best in California, with our high schools having a 96% graduation rate. Our success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our outstanding educators, administrators, and support staff. The District also thrives because of the strong support we receive from our parents and community. The last school year had many milestones and achievements, which included North High School's JROTC Program (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps) once again receiving the ''Honor Unit with Distinction'' designation, which is only awarded to 10% of Army JROTC programs worldwide. South High Robotics Club, the TORbots, placed 4111 and y1t in Los Angeles County and went on to compete in the international robotics competition. Torrance High School was recognized as a Project Lead the Way Distinguished School for their high-caliber career technical education program. At West High School, the Academic Decathlon Team ranked in the top 10 schools in the state-wide competition. West High's Cross-County Team also had a stellar year and won a historical first-everCIF (California Interscholastic Federation) State Title. In another first-ever, we celebrated the grand opening of the TUSD Aquatic Center! The Olympic size pool serves as the new home of our aquatics programs and provides our students a competition facility in which they can strengthen their skills. West and Torrance High both had a strong season with both schools having individual and relay qualifiers for CIF. The new school year brings many new opportunities for students to succeed. A summary of these code sections is contained in this notice. Further explanation regarding these laws may be requested of any school administrator. The Torrance Unified School District's Emergency and Disaster information card, when signed by the parent or guardian, will be used as acknowledgment that this notification has been received. All of the activities described begin with the opening of school each year and continue throughout the school year. A letter specifying any objection you may have at this time to any activity listed, or to the participation of your student in any activity listed, should be sent to the principal of the school your student attends. Statement of Nondiscrimination The Torrance Unified School District is committed to providing a safe school environment where all individuals in education are afforded equal access and opportunities. The District’s academic and other educational support programs, services and activities shall be free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying of any individual based on the person’s actual race, color, ancestry, national origin, immigration status, ethnic group identification, age, religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or gender expression; the perception of one or more of such characteristics; or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics. Specifically, state law prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender in enrollment, counseling, and the availability of physical education, athletic activities, and sports. Transgender students shall be permitted to participate in gender-segregated school programs and activities (e.g., athletic teams, sports competitions, and field trips) and to use facilities consistent with their gender identity. The District assures that lack of English language skills will not be a barrier to admission or participation District programs. Complaints of unlawful discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or bullying are investigated through the District’s Uniform Complaint Procedure. Such complaints must be filed no later than six months after knowledge of the alleged discrimination was first obtained. Notice at beginning of term of rights and responsibilities; required content (a) At the beginning of the first semester or quarter of the regular school term, the governing board of each school district shall notify the parent or guardian of a minor pupil regarding the right or responsibility of the parent or guardian under Sections 35291, 46014, 48205, 48207, 48208, 49403, 49423, 49451, 49472, and 51938 and Chapter 2.3 (commencing with Section 32255) of Part 19 of Division 1 of Title 1. (b) The notification also shall advise the parent or guardian of the availability of individualized instruction as prescribed by Section 48206.3, and of the program prescribed by Article 9 (commencing with Section 49510) of Chapter 9. (c) The notification also shall advise the parents and guardians of all pupils attending a school within the school district of the schedule of minimum days and pupil-free staff development days, and if minimum or pupil-free staff development days are scheduled thereafter, the governing board of the district shall notify parents and guardians of the affected pupils as early
