Not only was he at the forefront of Junior Hockey for over 25 years but was a respected Board member that resulted in his Life Membership in 2009. Yet Perry was not a hockey player. When his children showed enthusiasm for the game at Ashhurst School in the early 1990’s he did the fatherly thing and became involved organising and coaching the Ashhurst School teams. When his children made representative teams he became further involved playing his part on the Junior Committee. Here he helped institute the Under 11 tournaments that became renowned in the lower North Island – a first of its kind. But it is behind the scenes where Perry should be most remembered. How many can say that for 25 plus years they were at the grounds at 7am, having marked out the grass fields year after year and having made the mini goals for the youngsters, among the countless other enterprises that are required to run a successful programme. He did it all. Outside of Junior Hockey Perry was the go-to man when HMI was between CEO’s. He guided the ship on two of those occasions whilst at the same time was our caretaker supreme. With his trusty boot full of tools he was continually called upon to mend this and mend that. That was when he wasn’t responding to alarms going off at all times of the night. Living closest to the turf doesn’t always fare well. Perry was honoured with a Service Award twice – in 2004 and 2009. Now his grandchildren honour him, taking the field each Saturday morning, following on from his four children who all played, three achieving representative levels. They tread the same fields where Grandad worked tirelessly to provide so many children in the Manawatu with a wonderful sporting experience. Thanks Perry – and to Pauline – thanks for allowing him the time to be such a big part in so many lives. 5 | P a g e Hockey Manawatu Annual Report 201 6 6 | P a g e Hockey Manawatu Annual Report 201 6 GENERAL MANAGERS REPORT 7 - 23% growth with 2,000 Facebook followers 2017 will be - Turf No.2 being fully refurbished remembered for a PEOPLE number of highlights, changes, and more so for the loss of Perry Many people will remember Perry Kingsbeer for the immense contribution he gave to Hockey Kingsbeer, a long time stalwart of Manawatu for 25 years, and in Junior Hockey.
