CHAPTER III DISCUSSION 3.1. Summary of the Story In present-day Paris, Diana receives an old photo from Bruce Wayne through Wayne Enterprises of herself and four men taken during World War I, prompting her to recall her past. The daughter of Queen Hippolyta, Diana is raised on the hidden island of Themyscira, home to the Amazonian women warriors created by Zeus to protect mankind. One day in 1918, Diana, now a young woman, rescues US pilot Captain Steve Trevor when his plane crashes off the Themysciran coast. The island is soon invaded by German soldiers that trying to catch Steve. The Amazons kill the crew, but Antiope sacrifices herself to save Diana and dies. Afterwards, they interrogate Steve with the Lasso of Hestia and reveals that a great war is consuming the outside world and that he is an Allied spy. He has stolen a notebook of the chief chemist Dr. Isabel Maru also known as Doctor Poison, who is attempting to engineer a deadlier form of mustard gas under the orders of General Erich Ludendorff from a weapon facility in the Ottoman Empire. Believing Ares to be responsible for the war, Diana arms herself with The "Godkiller" sword, the lasso, and armor then leaving Themyscira with Steve to find and stop Ares for good. While they are arrived in London, they deliver Maru's notebook to the Supreme War Council, where Sir Patrick Morgan is trying to negotiate an armistice with Germany. Diana translates Maru's notes and reveals that the Germans plan to release the deadly gas at the Western Front. Although forbidden by his commander to act, Steve, with secret funding from Sir Patrick Morgan, recruits spy Sameer, 11 12 marksman Charlie, and smuggler Chief to help prevent the gas from being released. The team reaches the front in Belgium. Diana goes alone through No Man's Land and captures the enemy trench, allowing the Allied forces to help her liberate the village of Veld. The team later knows that a German’s victory party will be held at the nearby German High Command. Steve and Diana separately infiltrate the party, with Steve intending to find the gas and destroy it meanwhile Diana hoping to kill Ludendorff, believing that he is Ares and the war will end. Steve stops her to kill Ludendorff because Steve thinks that Ludendorff is not Ares, but this allows Ludendorff to unleash the gas on Veld, killing all villagers. Diana gets mad because Steve’s intervening. Diana later pursues Ludendorff to a base where the gas is being loaded into a bomber aircraft bound for London. Diana fights and kills him, but confused and when his death does not stop the war. Sir Patrick Morgan appears and reveals himself as Ares. He tells Diana that although he has subtly given humans ideas and inspirations, using Ludendorff and Maru as pawns in the process, it is ultimately their decision to resort to violence as they have been already been influenced. When Diana attempts to kill Ares with The "Godkiller" sword, he destroys it, then reveals to Diana that she is The "Godkiller", as the daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta. While the two battle, Steve's team destroys Maru's laboratory. Steve hijacks and pilots the bomber carrying the poison to a safe altitude and detonates it, sacrificing himself. Ares attempts to direct Diana's rage and grief at Steve's death by convincing her to kill Maru, but the memories of her experiences with Steve cause her to realize that humans have good within them. She ignores Maru and redirects Ares's lightning into him, killing him for good. Later, the team celebrates the end of the war. Back to the present day, Diana sends an email to 13 Bruce Wayne thanking him for the old photo of herself, Steve, Sameer, Charlie, and Chief and continues to fight and give on the world's behalf, understanding that only love can truly save the world. 3.2. Analysis of the Story In this chapter, the writer will analyze Bravery in Diana Prince’s character, the writer also wants to find what are the causes of Bravery which is influence Diana Prince’s character. 3.2.1. Causes of Bravery of Main Character There are 5 causes or factors which are causes someone show courage based on Rachman (1990) theory. 14 1. Self Confidence Data 1 Figure III.1. Diana talk to Steve (Scene: 0:39:36 –0:40:28) Steve: ‘’Ares as in… The God of War?’’ Diana: ‘’The God of War is our responsibility. Only an Amazon can defeat Him. With this. And once I do…the war will end.’’ Steve: ‘’Look. I appreciate your spirit… but this war is…It’s a great big mess. And there’s not a whole lot you and I can do about that. I mean we can get back to London and try to look for men who can.’’ Diana: ‘’I’m the man who can! Once I find and destroy Ares …the German armies will be freed from his influence…They will be good men again and the world will be better.’’ Steve: ‘’Great.’’ Diana: ‘’You will see.’’ Diana and Steve are leaving Themyscira to London with a sailing boat. Diana asks Steve to take her to the war area that are most dangerous but Steve rejects her demand because there is nothing that Diana and him can do about the war. According to the conversation between Steve and Diana, Diana ask Steve to take her to the war area that are most dangerous but Steve refuses her demand directly because there is nothing that Diana and him can do about the war and Steve prefers to ask other people’s help for doing that instead but Diana said ‘’I’m the 15 man who can! Once I find and destroy Ares …the German armies will be freed from his influence…They will be good men again and the world will be better.’’ Diana thought that she is surely can kill and destroy Ares once she found him with her own power and abilities and said that she was the only one person that can defeat Ares with saying ’You will see.’’ to Steve. It shows that Diana is having self- confidence for defeat Ares only by herself. The more self-confident people are, the less fear people will experience in combat is one of the factors or causes of Bravery. Based on all dialogue, Diana is indicated as person who is having Self-Confidence which makes her willing to dealing with a dangerous situation because of her power ability. 2. Training Data 2 Figure III.2. Diana practicing a sword with Antiope (Scene: 0:10:29 – 0:10:47) Antiope: ‘’You keep doubting yourself, Diana.’’ Diana: ‘’No, I don’t.’’ Antiope: ‘’Yes, you do.’’ Diana: ‘’No, I don’t.’’ Antiope: ‘’You are stronger than you believe. You have greater powers than you know. But if you don’t try harder…’’ 16 Hippolyta: ‘’Diana!’’ In this scene, Diana is practicing a sword secretly with Antiope as her coach. Diana is seen successfully fend off Antiope’s sword, even hit her stomach. However, Antiope can attack Diana back and say ‘’You keep doubting yourself, Diana.’’ And Diana seems deny it by replying ‘’No, I don’t.’’ because she thinks that she was already good enough in training and then try to attack her again but failed because Antiope attack her back fast and push Diana hard which makes Diana fall to the ground.‘’You are stronger than you believe. You have greater powers than you know. But if you don’t try harder…’’Antiope seems not satisfied with Diana’s sword practicing and wants Diana to practice more harder, but unfortunately before Antiope could finish her words, Hippolyta along with the palace guard caught they both are doing sword training. Antiope thinks that I’m ready.’’ Hippolyta: ‘’Does she?’ Antiope: ‘’I could begin showing her some things. She should at least be able to defend herself.’’ Hippolyta: ‘’From whom?’’ Antiope: ‘’In the event of an invasion.’’ Hippolyta: ‘’Isn’t that why I have the greatest warrior in our history leading an entire army, General?’’ Antiope: ‘’I pray there will never come when she has to fight. But, you know a scorpion must sting. A wolf must hunt.’’ Hippolyta: ‘’She is a child. The only child on the island. Please let her be so.’’ Diana: ‘’But mother!’’ Hippolyta: ‘’There will be no training!’’ Diana is running around and being chased by Diana’s babysitter.
