The location will be Orchard Heights Park in Middleton. Directions from Cty Q are go west on Indigo Way, turn left on Sandhill DR, then left on Park trail. There will be a five K walk beginning at 5pm, dinner and meeting to begin at 6 or when the walk gets back. At the June 10 board meeting it was decided to not have a potluck supper. We will instead ask everyone to bring their own meals, drinks, utensils, and chairs to help maintain social distancing I checked with the Middleton Parks and they said that as of June 11 we will be able to use the park on Aug 12. If this changes we will let everyone know. Madison Area Volkssport Association July - August 2020 Vol 2020-04 2 of 13 Dairyland Walkers 25th Anniversary Walk – Saturday, July 11, 2020 By Karen Reger th Members and other walkers: consider joining the Dairyland Walkers as they celebrate their 25 anniversary as a club on Saturday, July 11, at Tenney Park in Madison. There will be three routes available: a 2K, a 3K, and an 8K. You can do one, two, or all three routes. The two shorter routes stay fairly close to the park, and the 8K goes into various East Side neighborhoods. Registration will be next to the shelter in the park and will be from 8am to noon. Please finish walking by 3pm. In this age of social distancing, please bring your own writing utensils and please bring masks. The fee for the walk is $3.00. Saturday Walk & Eat Group - July 25 and August 8 By Mary Liebig More Saturday Group Walk and Eat opportunities are coming up in July and August: July 25 Middleton 10k Instead of meeting at the normal start point of the Middleton walk, the Hubbard Avenue Diner, we’ll meet at a park along the 10k route, Fireman’s Park at 7400 Lee St., near Middleton High School. I will bring maps and registration materials for the walk to the park; Hubbard Avenue Diner is not allowing us to access the walk box during Covid-19. Plan to meet at the main shelter of Fireman’s Park at 8:45 a.m. to register and bring your own pen to sign in. We plan to start walking at 9 a.m. We will not be eating inside a restaurant afterward, but those wishing to eat and visit after the walk may bring their own lunch or we may order take-out. Bring your own bag chair if you plan on staying to eat after the walk, and we will set up our chairs in the green space in Fireman’s Park. August 8 Madison Eastside 10k On Saturday morning, August 8, instead of meeting at the start point at Monty’s Blue Plate Diner, we’ll meet in the Olbrich Botanical Gardens north parking lot, at a picnic table near the children’s playground equipment. The address is 3330 Atwood Avenue and I will have the registration/maps located there. Meet at 8:45 a.m. to register and bring your own pen to sign in. We’ll start walking at 9 a.m. and again, not plan to eat inside a restaurant afterward. However, those wishing to eat and visit after the walk may bring their own lunch or we may order take-out. Bring your own bag chair if you plan on staying to eat after the walk, and we will set up our chairs in the green space in the small park off the Olbrich Gardens north parking lot. Baraboo Walk - Saturday, August 22 By Roger Moore The Baraboo Walk on Aug 22 begins at Band Stand Shelter in Ochsner Park and follows the course of the Baraboo River through Downtown. There will be 6k and 10k options for this walk with registration available from between 8 am and noon. All walkers need to have completed their walk by 3 pm. Those wishing to walk as a group should meet at the start point at 9 am. Baraboo is rich in circus history having served as the winter home for the Ringling Brothers Circus. Sites commemorating that history along the walk include the Circus World Museum, the Al Ringling Theater, the International Clown Hall of Fame and the Al Ringling Museum. Special programs criteria are met by the clock in the Sauk County Courthouse (Rock Around the Clock) and the Little Free Library in Nanny Park. Other places of interest along the route include the Driftless Glenn Distillery, the People of the Fabric of the Community mural (a mural of important people from Baraboo), the Sauk County Historical Museum and the Ochsner Zoo (a free public zoo). The walk crosses the Milwaukee Bridge and Iron Works Bridge built in 1884. Walkers coming into Baraboo on Hwy 12 should take Hwy 33 into the city, take a right on Park St then a left on Zoo Lane and follow it directly to Ochsner Park. Coming from the Interstate to the east would take a left on Park St. View on the Dairyland Walker Website at www.dairylandwalkers.com Madison Area Volkssport Association July - August 2020 Vol 2020-04 3 of 13 Sauk Prairie Walk - September 19, 2020 By Jill Ruef Can you say Limburger cheese? Not this year. We’re letting all our favorite cheeses ferment another year to coincide with the postponement of Monroe Cheese Days. We’ll be there in 2021. The Sauk Prairie area is full of wonderful history and some forgotten. The walk will start at the new River Side Park (alias August Derleth) in Sauk City. A good portion of the walk will take you along the updated Sauk Prairie River Trail which runs along the Wisconsin River. You will get a glimpse of the Dam and stroll along the river as it passes Eagle Island. Did you know Cuca Records was the hottest record producing company in the Midwest during the 60’s and 70’s! Focus was on polka and ethnic music such as Mule Skinner Blues and In Heaven there is no Beer. They even turned down David Bowie due to polka commitments. Park Hall (Freethinkers Hall) was constructed in 1884. They still do square dancing and hold Sunday services. The Celo Bottling Company bottled a drink called Polka Cola (as-well-as Sun Drop). The First Presbyterian in Prairie is the oldest church in Sauk County and the third oldest in the State of Wisconsin. They assume the Sauk City firehouse, built in 1862 it is probably the oldest fire station in the state. Did I forget Culvers? Nope! Oh! And there’s more. Saving them for when we see you in September. 2020 North Central Regional Roundup - Canceled By Jerry Wilson Per Doug Wiest “Word has just been received that the NorthCentral Regional Roundup scheduled for early October this year has been canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.” The Regional Roundup had been scheduled for the first weekend in October.
