Use of Force Data Police are charged with maintaining order and keeping people safe. In fulfilling those duties, they will sometimes need to use force on behalf of the state to protect the public and themselves from harm. Police forces have, since April 2017, been regularly publishing data on their officers’ use of force, whether that is a form of restraint, handcuffing, use of Taser or irritant spray. This data provides greater transparency than ever before into how and why force is used; strengthening the vital relationship between the police and the public is at the heart of our model of policing by consent. Below lists the use of force data links to local force websites, which can provide an insight to your local area. As listing this data in this form is so new, it is not always reliable to compare statistics nationally, due to inconsistencies. We will be reviewing and seeking to improve the recording and collation process as this project continues as regular practice.
