Just when these pilgrimages were reaching their height, the Turkish conquests in Syria made these journeys difficult for the pilgrims. Western Christendom was soon filled with tales of horrible deeds committed upon the Christians and their shrines. When news of these acts reached the West, there was outrage that the holy lands should be in possession of people who did not follow the Christian religion. Soon men became enamored with the idea of expelling the Muslims.
