I N T R O D U C T I O N Library is a treasure house of books and is capable of meeting almost all the information needs of people. Libraries are temples of knowledge, education/learning, where generations of young and old get enlightenment on the achievements of mankind. Goa can be legitimately proud of having one of the oldest libraries in India as well as in Asia which has enriched Goan cultural and educational life. Krishnadas Shama Goa State Central Library: The State Central Library occupies the pride of the place among the public libraries in India, especially for its collection on Goan History and Culture. The Central Library is the oldest Public Library in India established on 15th September 1832 by Vice Roy Dom Manuel de Portugal e Castro as `Publica Livaria`. Four years earlier to Calcutta Public Library, 1836. (The National Library of India) It was changed to Bibliotheca Publica and enriched with bibliographical repository transferred from the Convents run by religious orders, which were suppressed. However, the collection on Mathematics and Military Science was left in Academia and books on Administrative and Legislative matters were transferred to Secretariat Library. On 15th February 1897 the status of library was raised to that of a „National Library‟ and renamed as `Bibliotheca Nacional de Nova Goa`. In March 1925, it was annexed to the academic and cultural institution (Instituto Vasco da Gama) and designated as “Biblioteca Nacional Vasco da Gama” by Decree Law no.38684 dated 18th March 1952. Under this Decree the privilege of `Deposito Legal` (Delivery Act) was made applicable to this library by virtue of which the library received all publication from Portugal and her overseas Provinces. From September 1959, the Bibliotheca was detached from the Instituto Vasco-da-Gama and put under the administrative control of „Servicos de Instruccao e Saude‟ (Education and Health Services); it was then renamed as “Biblioteca Nacional de Goa”. The collection of pre-liberation period consists mainly of books and journals in Portuguese, French, Latin, English and very few books in local language like Konkani and Marathi. The total pre-liberation collection was about 40,487 volumes. The earliest book available is Repertorium Singularium Super Toto Codice Lugdini by Baldi published in 1539. The collection of the library has manuscripts and codices in Portugues, Castilian, Latin, Tamil, Ceylonese, Canary and Konkani dating since 17th and 18th century. The library is an important center for Indo-Portuguese studies as well as Portuguese colonial history. It is also a repository of Indo Portuguese Literature. The other important collection is of “Boletim Official” (Official Gazette) dating since 1837 till date. Further, State Central Library is acting as a repository of books published in State under the provision of the Delivery of Books Act, 1954.
