
Winter 2018 Class Schedule KNITTING BASICS AND SKILL BUILDING Class: Learn-to-Knit Basics Cost: $65 Three Sessions Available Dates/Time: Session 1 - Sat. mornings, Jan. 20, 27 & Feb. 3 from 9:00-11:00 am (Aldona Shumway) Session 2 - Fri. mornings, Jan. 26, Feb. 2 & 9 from 9:30-11:30 am (Heather Harden) Session 3 - Wed. evenings, Feb. 28, March 7 & 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm (Heather Harden) Duration: 3 classes, each class is 2 hours Skills Learned: In this class you will learn how to do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, do ribbing and learn to recognize stitches and bind-off. In addition you’ll learn increases and decreases and all the knitting basics to get you started. At the end of the class you’ll receive patterns for some simple projects for you to continue practicing on your own. Prerequisites: Learn-to-Knit Basics or MUST be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Included: Pattern, stitch marker Additional Info: Bring your own size 7 16” circular and double-pointed needles. Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basic Socks Cost: $45 Dates/Time: Sunday mornings, February 4 & 11 from 9:00-11:00 am Duration: 2 classes, each class is 2 hours Skills Learned: In this class you’ll knit one baby sock to learn all the aspects of sock knitting including turning a heel and the Kitchener stitch to close the toe. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off, MUST have experience knitting in the round on double-pointed needles Included: Double-pointed needles, yarn, stitch holder, pattern Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basic Cables Cost: $45 Dates/Time: Thursday mornings, January 18 & 25 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Duration: 2 classes, each class is 2 hours Skills Learned: You will learn several cable techniques including ropes, braids and traveling cables by knitting swatches in class. In addition, you will learn to read a cable chart, use a cable needle and how to select appropriate yarn for your cable projects. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Included: Yarn, cable needle, patterns for different cables, scarf and hat, Mother of Purl project bag Additional Info: Bring your own needles, US size 6 or 7 single-point (not included, but available for purchase) Instructor: Deb Lawless W NE Class: Basic Mittens Cost: $55 Dates/Time: Wednesday evenings, January 31 & Feb. 7 from 5:30-7:30 pm Duration: 2 classes, each class is 2 hours Skills Learned: Learn how to make a basic mitten on double-pointed needles in a worsted weight wool. You’ll learn you how to increase for a thumb gusset, how to make your thumb and a simple decrease to finish both thumb and the mitt. Think warm and cozy! Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, join in the round, knit and purl, knitting in the round on double-pointed needles Included: Double-point needles, yarn, stitch holder, pattern Instructor: Robin Oxenhorn Class: Basics of Magic Loop Cost: $30 Two Sessions Available Dates/Time: Session 1 - Thursday evening, January 25 from 6:30-8:30 pm Session 2 - Saturday morning, February 10 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Duration: 1 two-hour class Skills Learned: Make an adorable cup cozy using magic loop, a technique that uses one long needle to knit in the round instead of double-pointed needles. Magic loop can be used to make socks, sleeves and hats and is a great skill to have in your toolbox. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently do a long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, increase, decrease and be familiar with knitting in the round Included: Yarn and materials to make project, pattern Additional Info: Bring your own 32” or longer circular needle US size 4, Handi Tool, stitch markers, tapestry needle (not included, but available for purchase) Instructor: Heather Harden Class: Basic Finishing Stitches Cost: $25 Two Sessions Available Dates/Time: Session 1 - Monday morning, February 12 from 9:30-11:30 am Session 2 - Saturday morning, March 10 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm Duration: 1 two-hour class Skills Learned: Learn various techniques to finish your projects. You’ll knit 6 swatches made from your stash yarn and bring to class to learn the Kitchener, mattress and whip stitches and a three-needle bind-off. Directions for swatches will be provided upon registration. Prerequisites: Must be competent to independently cast on, knit, purl and bind-off Additional Info: Before class, knit 3 swatches and bring with you to class (see pattern provided), bring your own 24” or 32” circular needles US size 8, Handi Tool (not included but available for purchase) Instructor: Heather Harden EW N Class: Knitting Tips & Tricks: Reading Patterns Cost: $25 Dates/Time: Tuesday evening, January 30 from 5:30-7:30 pm Duration: 1 two-hour class Description: Sometimes following a pattern can frustrating because every designer does it a bit differ- ently. In this class, you will learn to knit according to a pattern and all that entails. Learn some basics that will help you understand patterns including materials, glossary, special terms, as well as reading charts for lace, cables and colorwork. You’ll walk through real- life examples of good and bad patterns and learn some tips to avoid losing your place. If you’ve had trouble with a particular pattern, bring it along for discussion. In this class, you will learn to put those stitches back on the needle correctly as well as recognize and fix small errors such as twisted and dropped stitches. You will also learn how to undo (a.k.a. “tink”) your knitting in order to make a correction. Prerequisites: MUST be competent to independently cast-on, knit, purl and bind-off Additional Info: Bring your own Handi-Tool (not included but available for purchase) There will be homework prior to class, directions will be sent upon registration. You’ll learn more sophisticated stitches such as the half double crochet, triple crochet, cluster stitch and magic ring and practice them in class. Prerequisites: Learn-to-Crochet Basics or equivalent Included: Hook, yarn, handouts Instructors: Mae Lambert EW N Class: Advanced Crochet Edging for Knitters Cost: $35 Dates/Time: Sunday afternoon, March 11 from 2:00-4:00 pm Duration: 1 class, 2 hours long Skills Learned: Adding a crochet edge to your knitting can add a pop of color, a decorative splash or some barely-there reinforcement. In this class you’ll learn some more advanced edging techniques such as the crab stitch, block stitch and polka dot stitch to take your knitted projects to the next level. You will knit swatches at home then crochet edges on them in class. Prerequisites: Beginning crochet or the equivalent Included: Handouts Additional Info: Bring your own size G crochet hook and worsted weight yarn in a variety of colors for edging (not incuded but available for purchase).
