The Yearbook marks a very successful and unique year for us all in Naas CBS and highlights many of the great achievements by so many over the year. But what an extraordinary year! Who could have believed in March of this year that our 6th years would not be doing a Leaving Cert, our 3rd years not doing their JCT or that our senior footballers might not be given an opportunity to defend their Leinster title? However more pertinent issues and important values came to the fore as the health of our community was threatened by COVID 19. We realised what was important in our lives; our health, our families and our friends. I want to acknowledge the tremendous work of our staff and students in these unprecedented times and the fabulous support of our parents all working as a collective to overcome the challenges inflicted on our school community. Its the onderful relationships that permeate throughout the school that makes Naas CBS unique. This allows for a great spirit and for an excellent working and learning environment. I want to thank the staff and students whose support and commitment contributes so much to allowing this to happen. Well done to all who represented the school in a huge number of activities during the year. Sincere thanks to teachers and parents who have worked so hard to make this happen. The voluntary work that goes on in our school is extraordinary and contributes greatly to the holistic development of the lads. Special thanks to our Meitheal team, Prefects and our Student Council for the wonderful leadership they have provided to their fellow students. Special congratulations to all involved in our sporting successes this year. Our senior footballers under the guidance of Mr Joyce, Mr McGuinness and Mr Cullagh deserve a special mention as they weaved a path to a third Leinster final in a row. This is a truly phenomenal achievement. I want to acknowledge and thank the hundreds of lads who come in and out of our school every day, who have worked so hard and are always pleasant, cooperative and a pleasure to be around. A special mention to our 6th years, whose resilience and adaptability is something that will stay with us for a long time. You showed your true character as you rose to the challenges of the last few months and I know it will have the positive effect of sustaining you in the years ahead. It has been a pleasure to have you journey with us over the last few years and we look forward to the opportunity of celebrating your time with us in Naas CBS in the near future. Sincere thanks to our students, Adam Halford, Dylan Stewart, Adam Farrelly, Charles Choiseul, Seán O Rourke, Luke McMahon, Fiachra McManus, Jaemark Reyes and Cian Horan, working under the guidance of Ms Claire O Brien for undertaking the onerous task of publishing this Yearbook. Many thanks also to Mr Stephens for his time and work. Your collective commitment and dedication made this publication possible. Well done to all. Go raibh míle maith agaibh. Ben Travers Principal 4 NAAS CBS YEARBOOK 2019-2020 Message from the 6th Year Head To all of our Leaving Cert. Students of 2020 In the dying minutes of the 2014 All Ireland Senior Football Final a last gasp Donegal move eventually fell to Colm McFadden lurking on the edge of the Kerry square. Trailing by 3 points, his attempted fist into the net from a parried sae rebounded off the upright and became Donegals last chance to clinch a dramatic draw. Moments later referee Eddie Kinsella blew the final whistle and Kerry were crowned All Ireland champions for the 37th time managed that day by Eamonn Fitmaurice. The game ill alas be remembered for Paul Durkans kick out that landed in Kieran Donaghs hands and the rest as the sa is histor! Two weeks previously in the same venue the drama was even at a higher pitch, when two heavy weights of the hurling world Kilkenny and Tipperary squared off in the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final. A late cameo appearance from Henry Shefflin with 4 mins to go and leading by 3 points Kilkenny looked to have had enough done, but on a day when the umpires became the busiest men in Croke Park, Tipperar erent going aa ithout a fight. It as a relentless game that produced a total of 54 scores and the journalists on that day could hardly keep up with everything that unfolded. With both teams leel in injur time a late John (Bubbles) ODer free from outside the Tipp 45m line looked to have gone between the posts. Referee Barry Kelly called for Hawk-Eye and the rest is history! Our Leaving Cert. class of 2020 were barely 2 weeks into their Naas CBS journey when all of this sporting drama was unfolding before our eyes. The Script were at number 1 in the Irish music charts with their hit single Superheroes. Since then Dublin have gone on to dominate the football landscape winning 5 All Irelands in a row. The hurling titles have been shared by Kilkenny, Tipperary, Galway and Limerick. Across the pond the Premier League has been dominated by financial investment and the lure of high wages for top players. Liverpool are close to clinching their first title in 30 years (fingers crossed). How we all would love to see a match again given our current way of living! As we know a lot can happen in 6 years and during that time, our 1 st years of 2014 with their pristine new uniforms and smart haircuts have now grown into fine young men. To all of our Leaving Cert. students of 2020, your current few months have no doubt been oershadoed b the Coid 19 pandemic but that ont define our journe. As our Year Head it has been a privilege to have had the chance to work with you. Since your first day in Naas CBS, I want to thank you for the positive relationships that you have made and the level of respect that you have shown for all of our staff. I want you to know that I am extremely proud of your relentless work, especiall oer the last fe months against all of the odds. Youe had to adapt and learn in ne ways but I have seen the emails and text messages from your teachers confirming your wonderful levels of engagement with all forms of online learning. The constant hours of study, revision and answering of exam questions, when endless conversations in our country focused on the uncertainty surrounding the Leaving Cert. The moving goal posts in terms of the time frame and now a new method of calculating your grades. Your resilience and ability to work independently will stand to you in all aspects of your future life. This is certainly a time in your education that we will all remember for the rest of our lives. On your behalf I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of your teachers and especially your form teachers for their wonderful support and their investment in your education during your CBS journey. The constant focus on your wellbeing, the wonderful relationships and sowing the seed of interest ithin their subject areas. I kno that just like ou, the da asnt constrained b the 4 oclock bell for our teachers. The last fe months hae been difficult for eerone but to witness the determination of your teachers to look after you has been inspiring. I know that all of your teachers will be in your corner in relation to the calculated grades process. 5 NAAS CBS YEARBOOK 2019-2020 Gentlemen.
