Canterbury Hockey Association (Inc.) Annual Report 2009 HIGHLIGHTS Hosted international match between New Zealand Black Sticks Women and India. Hosted the 2009 National Hockey League. Canterbury Senior Women win gold at the 2009 National Senior Tournament. Canterbury Masters 55+ Women win gold at the 2009 HNZ National Masters Tournament. Canterbury Under 16 B Girls win the 2009 HNZ National Under 16 Girls’ Championship Tournament. Canterbury Under 16 B Boys win the 2009 HNZ National Under 16 Boys’ Championship Tournament. Canterbury players Stacey Carr, Sophie Devine, Liz Perry and Kate Saunders included in the New Zealand Black Sticks national women’s squad, in a year that saw the team win the 2009 Oceania Cup and the 2009 Champions Challenge, and in the process qualified for the 2010 World Cup and Champions Trophy. Chris Leslie was assistant coach of this squad. Canterbury players Nick Haig, Bradley Shaw and Hayden Shaw included in the New Zealand Black Sticks national men’s squad. Canterbury players Bridget Blackwood, Sophie Devine and Fiona Morrison included in the New Zealand Black Sticks national junior women’s squad, which finished tenth at the 2009 Junior World Cup. Chris Leslie was coach of this squad. Canterbury players George Connell and Mitchell Hayde included in the New Zealand Black Sticks national junior women’s squad, which finished fourth at the 2009 Junior World Cup. Chris Edwards awarded Life Membership of the Canterbury Hockey Association. Local participation numbers, as registered with Hockey New Zealand, increased by 240, with 3,914 registered in 2009. The aims for which the Association is established and maintained are: To offer the widest possible opportunities for all persons to participate in the game of hockey and to make hockey a readily accessible sport and recreation for all. To provide all participants with the opportunity to excel by developing their game to their chosen or actual potential. To provide a healthy social environment for participants and others associated with the game of hockey. The operational and strategic changes implemented over the past two years have continued to be bedded down and have become established processes. Now two years into our strategic plan 2008-2012 ‘Securing Hockey’s Turf’, we are on target in most areas. As I did last year, I do recommend that you take time to read the plan (our plan) and please feel welcome to provide feedback via your clubs. You can access the plan through the Canterbury Hockey website or approach the office for a copy. The target of securing access to a fourth turf by April 2010 for Canterbury Hockey use is almost achieved as I write. This turf will be located at and owned by St Bede’s College. Canterbury hockey will lease the turf from St Bede’s in a similar way to which we lease the existing Porritt and Nunweek turfs from the Canterbury Artificial Surfaces Trust (CAST). I congratulate St Bede’s on their efforts and those key individuals associated with St Bede’s who have given freely of their time and expertise in this venture. As a result of significant financial input from St Bede’s itself and community funders toward this project, Canterbury Hockey has not been required to provide any direct capital input. This has meant that Canterbury Hockey has been able to work with CAST on the planning and funding for a fifth turf, which will likely be located at Nunweek Park. Subject to funding, as always, CAST have indicated that they believe it is possible that this fifth turf could be in place for the 2011 winter season, that being twelve months ahead of our strategic plan provision. This is all very good news; however it is now vital that clubs, and Canterbury Hockey too, increase the participation and development within our sport to make use of these facilities. The Board will be working with the management team this year to encourage and assist clubs to grow and be successful. This is critical to our survival as a sport and I urge each of you to do all you can to strengthen and grow your club now. As Football will no doubt promote on the back of their inclusion of the Football World Cup in 2010 we need to do the same and actively promote that NZ Hockey is also in the World Cups for Hockey. There will be strong competition among sports for new players, and retention, so we will need to be enthusiastic and vocal in our promotion of hockey. Your Board are mindful of the expectations of our community for excellence and high achievement by our representative teams, in line with the strategic targets set within our ‘High Performance’ area. The desired results have generally eluded Canterbury teams in the past year and options to address this are certainly being investigated.
