LONDON, W.C.2 PREFACE A philosopher once explained to üis pupils the correct mode in which to travel, by the difference between window- glass and looking-glass. " Through the one you can see people, in the other only yourself. The reason for this is only the little quicksilver on the looking-glass. Before we t.ravel we must scratch a little of the quicksilver off the looking-glass in which we are accustomed to see ourselves and our own life, through the clear córner we must look out on others—on humanity." Spain, and especially Andalusia, is to-day the Mecca of the traveller. For this a good guide is necessary, as Andalusia has changed vastly in the last few years, especially in all that relates to hotel accommodation, railway and other means of communication, hygiene, etc., that "aven those who know the country are agreeably astonished when visiting it again after a long absence. As a rule the towns of Malaga, Granada, Seville, Córdoba, Ronda and Cádiz and surrounding districts are the points üsually visited. The present Guide Book goes beyond this radius and includes Tetuan, Tangier, while Madrid is only lightly gketched. To the modern tourist, time is precious. In this Guide, time is taken into account, and geographical, historical and artistic Information is made as short as possible. On the first 18 pages practical information is given as to how to under- take a journey to Spain. The time tables, hotel tariífs, means of communication, naturally cannot be taken as absolutely correct as they are liable to alteration. The traveller will be obliged to make inquines from time to time. It is desired that this Guide Book may be of use in saving money and time, and that is may also awake an under- standing and love for this beautiful land of Andalusia and its amiable and hospiíable inhabitants. We shall be grateful for any information as to defects or errors. THK AUTHOR. TOURIST SEASON—CLIMATE. Donde esta la patria mia? Lagrimas su recuerdo me arranca sin cesar; Locura fué dejarte,—Oh ! bella Andalusia ! (ABBN-SAID, MOORISH POKT). " Where is my motherland? * The remembrance of thee draws ceaseless tears: It was madness to have left thee—O beautiful Andalusia 1" ANDALUSIA—a ñame full of music and warmth. A ñame that promises a vista of delightful experiences to the tourist. It is that part of Spain where the vegetation is most luxuriant—the only palm growing territory in Europe; where orange vine and olive trees grow beside the sugar-cane and cotton-tree ! Andalusia is the " Tarshish of the Bible. The Phoenicians four thousand years ago built the " Ships of Tarshish " out of the Cedars on Lebanon; the city is the Tartessos extolled by the Greeks, the land from which the Phoenicians obtained the precious metáis that were the founda- tion of their wealth. Romans and Goths have fought to obtain this land, until at last it fell into the hands of the Moors and a long and sad history began. When on cold winter evenings we read modern or ancient books of travel how the longing awakes in us to escape from the cold and fogs of northern lands to the warm and sunny Andalusia. To-day, with so many means of communication, thie land is not beyond the reach of those who wish to take a short holiday. Madrid is only thirty hours from London. Madrid to Córdoba is nine hours. Córdoba to Seville is two hours and a half. Regular steamers leave Southampton for Lisbon and Malaga and London and Liverpool for Gibraltar. Andalusia is the most southerly province of Spain. It comprises Almería, Malaga, Granada, Jaén, Seville, Huelva, Cádiz and Córdoba. With the exception of a few hot days in August the Andalusian summer is quite agreeable, but a visit in Spring, Autumn or Winter is the most delightful time for tourists. The average temperature is 21.2°' C. (70° Fahr.); in Nizza 16.3°' C. (61° Fahr.). The average winter temperature in Malaga is 12.7° C. (54o' Fahr.); Nizza 7o C.; Biarritz 1 8o. c (47e Fahr); Monaco 9o C. (49o' Fahr.). For Andalu- sia the average temperature for the three summer months is 25° C. {77 o' Fahr.). Alicante has 38 days of rain, Seville 60, Malaga 52. The climate of Andalusia and the luxuriant vegetation remind one of the tropics. The contrasts in temperature are striking. A máximum temperature of 37° C. (98.5 Fahr.) in August changes to 19° C.
