Two day Awareness Seminar on Green Chemistry & Engineering Date : 22ⁿ - 23 April, 2014 Venue : Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar University (DBATU), Lonere, Raigad Seminar Report Supporters : Department of Chemical and Petrochemicals, Government Of India INTRODUCTION The Two-day Awareness Seminar on Green Chemistry & Engineering, organised on the occasion of World Earth Day (22nd April), at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University (DBATU), Lonere, Dist. Raigad, was successfully concluded on 23rd April 2014. The objecves of the Seminar were as follows: - To create awareness of Green Chemistry and Engineering, with specific focus on the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry - To introduce emerging trends and technologies on green chemistry and engineering - To connect the parcipants to various soluon and technology provider companies - To learn from success case-studies and industry sharing ORGANISERS, SUPPORTERS & PARTNERS The Seminar was jointly organised by the Indian Chemical Council (ICC) and the Green ChemisTree Foundaon (GCF) with support from Dept. of Chemicals & Petrochemicals (DCPC), Govt. of India; Maharashtra Polluon Control Board (MPCB); Mahad Manufacturers Associaon (MMA); Roha Industries Associaon (RIA); and Industry Partners such as Clariant Chemicals India Pvt. Ltd and Pidilite Industries Ltd. PARTICIPATION The Seminar was well aended by over 80 Plant, Operaons and EHS personnel of more than 50 chemical companies located in the largest Industrial corridor of Maharashtra. The representaon was fairly distributed amongst Chiplun, Lote, Mahad, Roha, Patalganga and Taloja Industrial associaons, largely consisng of companies from Mahad and Roha regions. The companies parcipated were a mix of MNC (20%), Large (30%) and SME categories (50%). SPEAKERS, CONTEXT & CONTENT Leading academia experts who contributed to the deliberaon includes Prof. (Dr.) G D Yadav, Vice-Chancellor and R. T. Mody Disnguished Professor, Indian Instute of Technology (ICT), Mumbai; Prof. (Dr.) V V Mahajini, Professor of Chemical Engineering,. Instute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai; Prof. Bhalchandra M. Bhanage, Professor of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Head, Department of Chemistry, Instute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai; Mr. Nitesh Mehta, Founder Director, Newreka Green Synth Technologies Pvt. Ltd & Green ChemisTree Foundaon. Prof. G D Yadav was the keynote Speaker on Day 1, his presentaon was a comprehensive overview on today's environmental sustainability scenario, vis-à-vis the future and image of chemical industry, definion and scope of Green Chemistry and the opportunies that exist for companies to be ahead in mapping their green chemistry and engineering pracces and implementaon, along with few case-studies. Prof. Bhanage's presentaon included a very lucid introducon to the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, accompanied by specific industry example and case-study to each principle. Prof. V V Mahajani's Key-note address on Day II was equally technically insighul and with several examples that can serve as instant “p-offs” for the industry audience in addressing some of their immediate environmental and effluent challenges. The experts presentaons were followed by subject-specific presentaons by soluons and technology provider companies such as Newreka, Geist Research Pvt. Ltd, Bayer Technology Services, Equinox Soware Soluons, Praj Industries, and ROCHEM Separaon Systems. The Seminar also provided a value-based plaorm for locally situated companies to share about its iniaves and innovaons in this direcon, and thus facilitang learning from each-others' experiences. The companies who share their success case-studies were Lanxess India, Privi Organics and Newreka Green Synth Technologies Pvt. Ltd. TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE / EXHIBITION The key highlight of the Seminar was the small Exhibion- a plaorm to tangibly connect the green chemistry and engineering based soluon providers to its industry seekers parcipang in the Seminar to seek short term soluons for addressing their immediate environmental challenges at their respecve Units. Following companies parcipated as exhibitors in the Seminar: Green Processes: 1. Newreka Green Synth Technologies' Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai 2. Geist Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Goa Green Engineering: 3. Bayer Technology Services, Mumbai ZERO Liquid Discharge systems: 4. PRAJ Industries Ltd., Pune 5. ROCHEM Separaon Systems India Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai OVERALL FEEDBACK & OUTCOME The Two-day Awareness Seminar was organised with lot of input and suggesons from the ICC's Technology and Energy Expert Commiee, Chaired by Mr. Lokare. Prof. Mahajini, Mr. R N Mohanty, President, Technology, Pidilite Industries Pvt. Ltd, provided valuable suggesons and mentoring in the overall organising of this Seminar. The Seminar would not have concluded successfully without the generous support from the above academia and industry experts, and the Partners and Supporters who contributed me, resources and their well-wishes towards the Seminar. However, considering the scale of the challenge and the urgency of the subject, this Seminar could only serve a fracon of the industry audience and facilitate a very basic opening to the emerging field of Green Chemistry & Engineering pracces and technologies. To briefly summarise the overall outcome of the Seminar: - It served as a plaorm to expand the exisng awareness of the subject amongst the chemicals companies situated in and around Raigad Dist, and thus expand their understanding on green chemistry and engineering based pracces and technologies available for its industrial implementaon - The Seminar facilitated a bridge between the Maharashtra Polluon Control Board (MPCB) and the Chemical industry located in Konkan Industrial belt, which comprises of more than 60% of the total chemical manufacturing units in Maharashtra. - The two-day Seminar also served as an opportunity for the local companies to share experiences and case- studies, exchange iniaves and ideas and collecvely evaluate feasible and implementable alternaves for impacng their immediate environmental challenges. - The technical presentaons introduced various potenal soluons that can help in resolving some of the pressing environmental challenges currently faced by the chemical industry. - The Seminar parcipants also ulized this opportunity to interact with speakers and experts for their guidance on their process relevant effluent issues, while also exchanging their respecve environmental issues and iniaves with the co-parcipants. The overall execuon of the Seminar and the arrangements were made effecve and smoothly managed by the student's team of 3rd Chemical Engineering Department under the kind supervision and coordinaon of Dr. Yogesh Mahajan, Professor, Chemical Engineering Dept. at DBATU. The Seminar, in addion also facilitated an impromptu interacve plaorm for the third and final year Chemistry and Chemical Engineering students. A panel discussion chaired by Prof. V V Mahajini was organised for the Students to ask relevant quesons on the subject of Green Chemistry & Engineering. Followed by a mely presentaon and talk by Mr. Nitesh Mehta on career opportunies for Chemists and Chemical Engineers in the emerging field of Green Chemistry & Green Engineering, and introducing the concept of “Enviropreneurship”. Few comments from Seminar parcipants: Thank you very much for so nicely managing the 'SEMINAR' on 22 and 23 April 2014 at Lonere.
