MIN. BID AUCTION & A THE EMPIRES YOU’RE ON TOP GIRL CANDI 1033 M- 1000 WD Top rated group harmony dancer with doo-wop overtones, even so it seems almost impossible that this record dates from 1963 so ahead of its time is it. The label hailed from Wilmington, Delaware and was one of a number of labels courtesy of James Chavis who operated out of Vandever Street. B MELVIN DAVIS I MUST LOVE YOU GROOVESVILL VG+ 200 E 1003 5-star Detroit sixties soul from a guy who was a friend to many on the recent Detroit soul trip. One of those records that looks to be in much worse condition than the sound in the grooves. Check the soundbite. C AD-LIBS I DON’T NEED NO FORTUNE PASSION 1 M- 300 TELLER The famed sixties group could turn out fine seventies soul as well (as this track proves) listed by some sources as a 1982 release this is more likely from 1977. A top quality modern dancer whatever the truth. D SEAN (MR ESQUIRE) NEVER DO I WORRY MAGIC TOUCH M- 300 TAYLOR 2003 One of those all-too-frequent circumstances whereby an artist does a couple of records for a label, one is relatively common – the other is dog rare. This is such a case. An absolute almost-unknown stormer from the Milwaukee label. A good flipside too ‘Funky Soul Dance’ (which we also put on the soundbite). E THE INTREPIDS TO MAKE YOU LOVE ME NITE BEAT M- 300 10001 First label before Cotillion for this super group dancer dating from 1970. An unknown group but unlikely to be the Columbia ‘After You’ve Had Your Fling’ group from the mid-seventies. Fantastic crisp and clear production is well worth checking out/ owning. F DON GARDNER IS THIS REALLY LOVE CEDRID 3002 VG++ 200 The rarer red label release for this one (in fact the first we’ve seen for 25 years) from James Vanteer’s label. Originally played for the flipside ‘Tighten Up Your Love’ (at Stafford), all of a sudden that side is finding favour once more so we’ve included a soundbite on that one too. Great doublesider. G THE FIESTAS THINK SMART OLD TOWN M- 200 1778 Records such as this one absolutely prove that quality didn’t evaporate when the Casino closed its doors. The Fiestas were in the swansong of their career when this one was released in March 1965 having had a major hit in 1959 with ‘So Fine’. In fact the Old Town label had a remarkably low hit rate over its near 30 year lifespan helped by the fact that owner Hy Weiss knew how to make money elsewhere! H SAM WILLIAMS LOVE SLIPPED THROUGH TOWER 367 WD M- 1000 MY FINGERS One of Northern Soul’s greatest moments of course, and whatever the virtues of the other versions this one is peerless. But wait! How many of the oft-spun copies seen on turntables are mint? The old styrene cue-burn is a stranger to this copy. Check out the soundbite for confirmation of this fact. I TOMMY RAY TUCKER CRY CRY CRY CHALLENGE VG++ 200 59303 Tucker was a white artist from Memphis who credited the ‘Ray’ element to his name to avoid confusion with the famous black artist although, in fact, it was his real full name. A tragic character (he once served a prison sentence for involuntary manslaughter). ‘Cry Cry Cry’ represents a rather infrequent move towards black music but is an infuriatingly catchy R&B-styled mover. As is often the case with major labels this one is VERY rare on a black issue copy. J SHAWN ROBINSON MY DEAR HEART MINIT 32013 D M- 250 One of the epic productions of the Northern genre from Arthur Wright. Two schools of thought on this one-off artist. Firstly that she was a model of Caucasian origin, secondly that she was a genuine black artist due to her relationship with producer Wright (who scarcely ventured outside of Black Music). Whatever the truth, this is one hell of a great record offered in sparkling ‘brand new’ condition. K BETTY TURNER THE WINDS KEPT CRESCENT 637 M- 40 LAUGHING 0 Staying with the Los Angeles area and a wonderful brassy mover from the early ’64. By the following year Turner’s career as a named/recorded artist was over, but she lives on though collectors who keep her name alive via 45s such as this. L SANDY WYNNS A TOUCH OF VENUS UK FONTANA VG++ 200 550 Another of our occasional forays into the world of British releases turns up the surprising UK release of this Los Angeles gem. It’s always mystifying as to why some of these things came out here – this was certainly a non-hit in the U.S where it was briefly ‘leased’ to the Pittsburgh Doc label only to hurriedly re-appear on Champion (courtesy of Motown’s L.A. office). Perhaps, with Freddie and the Dreamers in the charts, someone in London thought that quality soul stood a chance. They were wrong. It’s a rarity. SECOND PAGE FOCUS 1 LLOYD PRICE JUST FOR BABY GSF 6894 M- 15 Fantastic flip to ‘Love Music’ is only on GSF (not LPG which also issued ‘Love Music’). 2 ARCHIE BELL & AIN’T NOTHING FOR A MAN GLADES 615 M- 15 THE DRELLS IN LOVE Our favourite record from Archie. Fabulous 1973 mover on a Philip Mitchell song. 3 CURTIS SMITH I LIKE EVERYTHING DOMA 101 M- 20 If this great piece of Chicago had two more noughts on the price it would be top of every want list. 4 THE FIVE STAIRSTEPS AIN’T GONNA REST WINDY C 605 M- 15 Storming uptempo bongo-driven mover from the boys. 5 ANTHONY & THE IMPERIALS HOLD ON AVCO 4651 M- 10 One of Anthony’s seventies tracks. A nice dancer out of Philadelphia. 6 LORRAINE THE MORE I GET, THE MORE I ELUDE 71096 M- 10 JOHNSON WANT Great uptempo late seventies dancer. Got a few plays once, but ready for a revival. 7 THE INCREDIBLES I CAN’T GET OVER LOSING AUDIO ARTS M- 20 YOUR LOVE 90006 Truly superb-kind of great oldie needed to ring the changes. 8 ANNETTE THOMAS HANG ON STAX 0118 WD M- 10 1974 Southern mover with a funky edge as played at the Mecca. Nice white promos. 9 THE WHISPERS I CAN REMEMBER SOUL CLOCK 1001 M- 10 Great group dancer, same backing as ‘Be Happy’ by Sugar Pie Desanto on the same label. 10 RICKY ALLEN I’M A REAL THANKFUL MAN 4 BROTHERS 401 M- 15 Fabulous Chicago dancer with just a tiny R&B edge.
