Dep.313 May 2013 Inventory Dep.313 Sutherland Papers National Library of Scotland Manuscripts Division George IV Bridge Edinburgh EH1 1EW Tel: 0131-466 2812 Fax: 0131-466 2811 E-mail: [email protected] © Trustees of the National Library of Scotland The Sutherland papers, being the charters, family, estate, legal, and financial records of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland from the 13th century to the death of the 2nd Duke in 1861, were deposited in the National Library of Scotland by the Countess of Sutherland in 1980 as Deposit 313. Although the charters date back to the early 13th century the bulk of the archive relates to the 18th and early 19th centuries, and shows the growth of one of the largest landed estates in Scotland at the time of the controversial clearances. The main series of family papers begins in the 17th century with personal accounts of the Earls from the 1650s and correspondence from the time of the 13th Earl. Of particular interest amongst the early letters is the correspondence relating to the 1715 and 1745 Rebellions. By the time of Elizabeth, Duchess-Countess of Sutherland there is an extensive run of correspondence largely on family and estate matters. Detailed records of estate management also appear from the 17th century and include accounts of Sir Robert Gordon as tutor to the 13th Earl of Sutherland, 1615-26. The Factors' records gradually increase in number and comprehensiveness until by 19th century scarcely any aspect of estate business is left unrecorded. The archive includes records of a number of other families: the Maxwells of Preston, connected with the Earls of Sutherland by marriage; the Reay Country papers and those relating to the Gordons of Carrol are present as their lands were purchased by the Sutherland estate in the early 19th century. The papers were arranged and listed in 1954 by Professor Robin Adam and this arranged has largely been retained. A copy of his `Draft Catalogue of Dunrobin Muniments’, is available on request. The Sutherland papers were consulted by Sir William Fraser in connection with his work for which see The Sutherland Book, 3 vols (Edinburgh, 1892). Many items removed by Fraser have recently been restored to the archive and now form part of Acc.10853. Although these papers relate broadly to Sutherland matters there are exceptions; it should be noted that material in some of the sections overlaps and that the existence of a folder or bundle does not imply that papers on the same subject do not occur elsewhere. See also Dep.314. For further estate papers, 1861-1920, see Accs.10225, 10853 and 12173. Acc.10853 and 12173 include some pre-1861 estate papers. Personal papers post-1861 have been retained at Dunrobin. After the marriage of Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland in 1785, the estate was managed from Trentham and London with local Factors based in Sutherland. Policy papers and material relating to Sutherland Head Office are held with the archive of the family’s English estates at Staffordshire Record Office Deposited, 1980 1-477 TITLES 478-909 HOUSEHOLD AND PERSONAL PAPERS 478-503 To 1703 504-577 1703-33 578-624 Katherine, Lady Strathnaver 625-697 William, 16th Earl of Sutherland 698-723 William, 17th Earl of Sutherland 724-798 Elizabeth, Duchess-Countess and George, 1st Duke of Sutherland 799-909 George, 2nd Duke of Sutherland 910-2909 ESTATE MANAGEMENT PAPERS 910-1088 Miscellaneous Papers 1089-1570 Letters of Factors and Law Agents 1571-1591 Cleveland House Papers 1592-2097 Factors' Accounts and Vouchers 2098-307 Rentals 2308-909 Miscellaneous management papers 1817-61 2910-3146 LEGAL PAPERS 2910-2979 Law Agents' Accounts 2980-3146 Inventories and Processes 3147-3176 TACKS 3177-3207 JURISDICTIONS AND PUBLIC AUTHORITIES 3218-3311 MILITARY 3312-3325 PAPERS RELATING TO CAITHNESS 3326-3478 REAY ESTATE 3479-3482 ROSS-SHIRE ESTATES 3483-3533 GORDON OF CARROLL 3534-3556 MAXWELL OF PRESTON 3557-3580 SUTHERLAND SAVINGS BANK 3581-3632 MAPS AND PLANS 3633-3674 MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS 1-477 TITLES This inventory provides a basic finding aid to the Sutherland titles to 1861.
