UNIVERSITY PROFILE The University of San Diego, a Roman Catholic University, is located on a mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish University city of Alcala where St. Didacus, from whom San Diego received its name, spent much of his time. The Universtiy is superbly located in an urban area, close to business, cultural, residential, and recreational areas, and close to both the rail and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD currently is experiencing record attendance for the 1979-80 school year. Un dergraduate enrollment numbers 2,526 and graduate and law students bring the campus enrollment to 4,000. The University emphasizes a high academic standard for its students. The University includes a Col lege of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, and Allied Health Sciences. Each is characterized by small classes and excellent student-faculty rapport. The Admissions department is proud of the fact that USD draws students from nearly every region of the United States, with most students coming from high schools and colleges in California and Arizona. The school also has foreign students from several Latin American countries, Mexico, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Recreation and Athletics is rapidly expanding to include: Yoga, Karate, Surfing, Modern Dance, Back packing, Ballet, Sailing, Crew, as well as intercollegiate sports for men and women. lntercollegiately, USD has teams in men's baseball, basketball, cross country, crew, football , golf, tennis, and in women's basket ball, cross country, crew, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. 2 The Torero's home schedule will divide time this season between the San Diego Sports Arena and the USO Sports Center. All non-conference home games will be held in the 2,500 seat USO Sports Ce nter; and all conference home games will be held in the 13,000 seat San Diego Sports Arena. 3 JIM BROVELLI, HEAD BASKETBALL COACH Since coming to the University of San Diego in 1973, Jim Brovelli has developed the Torero basketball program into one of the finest on the West Coast. As an NCAA Division 11 Inde pendent, the Toreros made the Western Regionals three times while winning the Championship in 1978-79. Brovelli's record the last three years has been 20-7, 22-7, 19-7 and has just sur passed the 100 victory mark which makes him the winningest coach in USO history. He also received "Coach of the Year" honors for District VIII in 1977-78. Brovelli's Toreros will be a new entry into the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1979-80 and are looking forward to the monumental challenge of com peting against some of the finest basketball schools in the country. Brovelli graduated from the University of San Francisco in 1964 where the Dons took two WCAC titles in 1963 and 1964. Following graduation he was named to a United States All Star Team which toured the country playing exhibition games against the Russian National Team. In 1966 he was selected as West Coast AAU "Athlete of the Year" while playing for the San Francisco Athletic Club. This honor subsequently earned him a position on an AAU All-Star team which toured South America. Jim began his coaching career in 1967. His combined high school and college record is 202-102. Jim and his wife Nada, have two children, Mike 7, and Michele 5 . COACH BROVELLl'S CAREER RECORD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO 103-56 BROVELLl'S SEASON OUTLOOK: The West Coast Athletic Conference is one of the finest basketball conferences in the country. There is no doubt that this will be the greatest challenge in the history of the University of San Diego basketball program. Any success we might experience this season will be a direct result of a total team effort. We are on the ground floor and it will be an exciting experience to establish rivals in our conference and develop a winning tradition. USF, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, Portland, and Seattle have to be classified as favorites for a NCAA playoff berth. Experience is essential in the WCAC, so I am very pleased and fortunate to have everyone returning from a 19-7 season. 4 JOHN COSENTINO, ASSISTANT BASKETBALL COACH John Cosentino joins the University of San Diego basketball staff as a fu fl time assistant coach. John will coordinate the Toreros' recru iting and scouting program under head coach Jim Brovelli. He will also advise and counsel the academic structure of the team. Prior to Cosentino's appointment to the Torero staff he was a successful var sity basketball, football and baseball coach at University High School in San Diego. John was also the freshman coach at United States International University. Cosentino, a native of San Diego, earned all-county honors in football and bas ketball. In his senior year he captained University to a California Interscholastic Federation
