Bangang, Terengganu terms referring to river; including alor (Kelantan), carok (Kedah), parit (Johor), batang (Sarawak) and terusan • Rivers have played a major and important role in shaping and influencing the development of the nation and the cultures of its people. Tekala, Selangor • Most of the world’s major cities were built on or around areas for freshwater • Almost all major towns, businesses and settlements in Malaysia are located beside a river. – Kuala Lumpur was founded on the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers. Public outreach programme “GREEN TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT” PEOPLE BACKGROUND The River of Life Project (ROL) was launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia on July 1st 2011 with the aim to transform the Klang and Gombak River into a vibrant and liveable waterfront with high economic value by year 2020. The project had three (3) main components as its focus areas: River Cleaning, River Master Planning and Commercialisation & Tourism. Under the River Cleaning component, Public Outreach Programme (POP) or better known as ROLPOP among the 13 key initiatives. Since the project started, two (2) ROLPOP phases were successfully carried out focusing and another 3 are on-going KLANG RIVER . Klang River is a river which flows through Kuala Lumpur & Selangor in Malaysia & eventually flows into the Straits of Malacca. It is approximately 120 km (75 mi) in length and drains a basin of about 1,288 km2 (497 sq mi). It’s 4th biggest river basin in Selangor . Selangor : 80 km @ 66.7% & WPKL: 40 km @ 33.3% . Flowing through 5 local authorities MPK (21km), MBSA (20km), MBSJ (9km), MBPJ (6km), DBKL (40 km) & MPAJ (24km). Klang River has 11 major tributaries. There are two major dams upstream of the river Batu Dam & Klang Gates Dam, which provide water supply to the people of Klang Valley & mitigate floods.
