GRADE EIGHT PRIMARY SOURCES History from Personal Journals and Letters INDICATORS Social Studies: SKILLS AND METHODS 4 Compare accuracy and point of view of fiction and nonfiction sources about a particular era or event. 5 Construct a historical narrative using primary and secondary sources. English Language Arts: ACQUISITION OF VOCABULARY > TOOLS AND RESOURCES 7 Determine the meanings and pronunciations of unknown words by using dictionaries, thesauruses, glossaries, technology and textual features, such as definitional footnotes or sidebars. English Language Arts: READING PROCESS > COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES 2 Answer literal, inferential, evaluative and synthesizing questions to demonstrate comprehension of grade-appropriate print texts and electronic and visual media. Language Arts: WRITING APPLICATIONS 1 Write narratives that: a. sustain reader interest by pacing action and developing an engaging plot (e.g., tension and suspense); b. use literary devices to enhance style and tone; and c. create complex characters in a definite, believable setting. 4 Write informational essays or reports, including research, that: a. pose relevant and tightly drawn questions that engage the reader; b. provide a clear and accurate perspective on the subject; c. create an organizing structure appropriate to the purpose, audience and context; d. support the main ideas with facts, details, examples and explanations from sources; and e. document sources and include bibliographies. 6 Produce informal writings (e.g., journals, notes and poems) for various purposes. Bonus Materials, and the WOUB/Shelburne Films DVD documentary Opening the Door West tie-ins to the activities.) • Respond to Current Events 4 The documentary uses primary sources – accounts left behind by the first official settlers of Northwest Territory – to paint a rich picture of the life and times of the settlement of Ohio. • View examples from the documentary on the DVD. • Read examples from the bonus materials on the CD. • Review the definitions of primary and secondary sources if necessary. • Use local newspapers (or other sources) to learn about current events affecting the United States. • Respond to current events affecting the United States in journal entries. These journal entries could be a part of or entirely separate from their daily journals. Opening the Door West Plus!
