She was also the longest-serving female chief minister of any Indian state. She led the Indian national congress to 3 consecutive term victories. she served for a period of 15 years which began in 1998 and ended in 2013. During her stay as Chief Minister of Delhi she implemented various successful policies and made many valuable contributions to the state. Personal life Sheila Dikshit was born on 31 March 1938 in Kapurthala, Punjab. Her father's name was Sanjay Kapoor. She completed her schooling at the Convent of Jesus and Mary School. She later graduated with a Master of Arts degree in history from Miranda House, Delhi University. She married Vinod Dikshit who was the son of the renouned freedom fighter Uma Shankar Dikshit. She was blessed with two children, namely, her son Sandeep Dikshit, and daughter, Latika Syed. Political career Shiela dikshits entry into politics was a matter of chance. She was noticed by Indira Gandhi when she was working with her father-in-law Mr Uma Shankar Dikshit. Indira Gandhi, immediately recognised her abilities and offered her to work in the UN. However, she only came into the political limelight when Rajiv Gandhi handpicked her as part of his council of ministers in 1984. She represented India at the United Nations Commission on Status of Women between (1984– 1989). She also served as the Union Minister during 1986–1989. Despite these positions her most significant role was played during her 3 terms as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Policies During her reign she oversaw the construction of a staggering 70 flyovers, which included the Barapullah project. She also expanded and operationalised the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation or (DMRC) . most importantly she made a big ecological shift from the city’s diesel- propelled public bus fleet to a compressed natural gas one. These projects were completed between 1998 and 2013. Qualities Being a woman politician in itself is a task and working as the Chief Minster of the capital adds to the burden. She had maintained a good reputation and implemented strong changes. to do so she was required to develop certain qualities. Amongst these qualities were her Boldness, her fast decision making abilities and having a well sort out and practical approach. Achievements Sheila dikshit commnded immense respect due to her commitment and honesty. Due to this she was awarded many prestigious awards during her lifetime. some of these awards included: • 2008 Best Chief Minister of India, by Journalist Association of India • 2009 Politician of the Year by NDTV • 2010 Dara Shikoh award by the Indo-Iran Society[30] • 2013 Delhi Women of the Decade Achievers Award 2013 by ALL Ladies League for Outstanding Public Service Later Life and death During her political career, she received a lot of respect from her supporters and opponents alike. This was noted when after her death, Arvind Kejriwal the current CM of Delhi who had won against her in the elections decided to honour her memory with a two day mourning period and accorded a state funeral. She passed away at the ripe old age of 81. The reforms brought by her in the city of Delhi are still appreciated by the people of Delhi. The institutional changes she made along with her towering presence have set the standard high. She is considered to be one of the most legendary leaders of Delhi amongst the modern-day leaders.
