CANOEING AT OLYMPIC GAMES 1924 1936 – 2008 1 C A N O E I N G AT THE 1976 SUMMER OLYMPICS The 1976 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXI Olympiad were held July 17 to August 1, 1976 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Montreal was awarded the rights to the 1976 Games on May 12, 1970, at the 69th IOC Session in Amsterdam, over the bids of Moscow and Los Angeles, which later hosted the 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympic Games respectively. These were the first Olympic Games held in Canada, preceding the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. One blank vote was cast in the second and final round. One factor favoring Montreal was that the IOC did not want the Summer Games hosted in a superpower for fears of political backlash, which would be proven later on in the Olympic boycotts of 1980 and 1984. There were: 92 NOC’s; 6 028 athletes (1247 women and 4781 men); 198 events in 21 sports. LOGO POSTER It is made up of the Olympic rings The Games Organising Committee made mounted on an Olympic podium, which is also two main series of posters. The first illustrated the graphic interpretation of the letter M, the eight key themes: the emblem of the initial of Montreal. In the centre, the athletics International Olympic Committee (here): track, the focal point of the Games. This entitled “The Invitation” and representing the emblem invokes the universal fraternity five rings reflected symbolically by successive offered by the Olympic Ideal, as well as the waves, thus inviting the athletes from all the glory of the winners, the gallant spirit of their continents to the 1976 Olympic Games; the battles and the accession of Montreal to the emblem of the Organising Committee, rank of Olympic city. Kingston 1976, Olympia and the Olympic torch carrier, Montreal and Antiquity, the Olympic Stadium, the international youth camp, the mascot. The second series illustrates sports. 2 MEDAL On the obverse, the design of Guiseppe Cassioli, created for the Amsterdam Games in 1928. The principal symbols are Victory, Fraternity and Universality. The reverse was designed as intentionally bare. It comprises a stylized laurel crown, symbol of victory since the Games of Antiquity, and the emblem of the Montreal Games. MASCOT Canoeing at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada consisted of 11 events, all in canoe sprint, held at the rowing basin on Île Notre-Dame. The canoe slalom events introduced at the previous Games in Munich were not included in the Montreal program though four 500 m events for men were (C-1, C-2, K-1 and K-2).
