Indiana Historical Society Y-Press Collection Page 1 SKETCH From 1990 to 2012, the youth media organization Y-Press trained 1,750 young Hoosiers to become serious journalists, reporting both on stories that were important to youth in their communities and stories that affected youth worldwide. Y-Press, which until 1999 was housed under a national organization known as Children’s Express, ran stories of local youth interest each week in the Indianapolis Star in print, online, and for a few years on air through WFYI public radio. In addition, students involved in the organization had the opportunity to pitch and raise funds to execute a larger feature story that involved travel within the United States or internationally. Y-Press youth had the opportunity to report on kid’s issues around the world, traveling to Kuwait, Northern Ireland, Cuba, Benin, and Brazil, amongst other places, and also provided coverage for political conventions in Presidential election years. In addition, youth journalists interviewed over 7,500 individuals, including many public figures such as athletes Magic Johnson and Reggie Miller, authors Judy Blume and Gary Paulsen, and politicians President Bill Clinton and Senator Richard Lugar. Y-Press also produced a few publications that highlighted youth voices, such as Diversity Book, Diversity Calendar, and the Kids Count Data Book. Sources: Materials in the collection. Indiana Historical Society Y-Press Collection Page 2 SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection contains manuscripts, photographs, audio cassettes, video cassettes, floppy disks, compact discs, and DVDs. The collection has been divided into 48 different series. Series 1-23 contain research, interview transcripts, tearsheets, audio recordings of interviews, and other supplemental materials that were used to produce the Children's Express weekly newspaper page and Y-Press's bi-monthly story. Each series corresponds with one year between 1989 and 2012. Series 24 is Administrative Files, which encompasses any documents, audio, or video that pertained to the operations of the larger Children’s Express/Y-Press organization, such as grant reports of the Lilly Endowment, editor or reporter training and educational materials, governance committees, publicity materials, and files tracking participants and alumni. Series 25-45 encompass the larger projects and feature stories that Y-Press worked on, such as the Diversity Book, as well as trips for stories on location in Kuwait, Nogales, Cuba, Oklahoma City, Northern Ireland, Bangladesh, Puerto Rico, Russia, Wisconsin, Hong Kong, Brazil, Benin, France, London, Michigan, and political conventions. Each of these features series contains research materials, drafts, interview transcripts, interview audio, video and photographs compiled and collected by the youth reporters and editors. Series 46 contains audio cassettes and some documents related to the WCKD (What Kids Can Do) program and Y-Press Radio. Series 47 is made up of miscellaneous audio and video that did not seem to fit within any of the other series.
