Haymon White Tara Ann Maginnis rrlie J{onorafJfe Connie MacK Republican Connie Mack was sworn in as United States Sena tor from Florida on January 3, 1989 for a six-year term. Previously, he served three two-year terms as a member of the House of Represen tatives from Southwest Florida and was identified by .us, ~and ~ ~~ as one of the nation's most effective, "new-ris­ ing political stars." Throughout his career in pu blic service, he has championed policies of less taxes, less spending, less government, and more freedom. Senator Mack currently serves on four committees; Appropriat ions; Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Joint Economic; and SmalI Business. He was ranking Republ ican of the HUD Investigative Subcommittee and was nominated by President Bush as a U.S. Senate representative to the United Nations in 1990. In the House, he served on the Budget and Foreign Affairs Committees. In the Senate, he has opposed tax increases and introduced legislation to cut the capital gains tax. Senator Mack supports a presidential line-item veto. As a member of the House, he co-authored and introduced the landmark Gramm-Rudman deficit reduction law and was an instrumental supporter of President Reagan's economic policies. To help Florida receive its fair share of federal grants, Senator Mack intro­ duced The Fair Share Act. As a member of the Senate Bi-partisan Task Force on Major League Basebal l Expansion, he is working to ensure that Florida receives its fair share of baseball teams. His amendment to provide direct rental assistance to pu blic housing residents was a key component of legis­ lation which passed Congress. To help in the fight against cancer, Senator Mack introduced legislation to provide tax credits for cancer screening. In foreign policy, Senator Mack supports efforts to promote and preserve freedom around the world. Within his first seven months in the Senate, his legislation requiring State Department reports on PLO activities became law. While continuing to oppose normalization of relations with Cuba, he formed the Senate Cuba Freedom Caucus and saw his amendment to tight­ en t he economic embargo against Castro become la w. Senator Mack al so supports a strong national defense.
