All My Relations By Linda Hogan 1 It is a sunny, clear day outside, almost hot, and a slight breeze comes through the My notes about what I am room from the front door. We sit at the table and talk. As is usual in an Indian house- reading hold, food preparation had begun as soon as we arrived and now there is the snap of potatoes frying in the black skillet, the sweet smell of white bread overwhelming even the grease, and the welcome black coffee. A ringer washer stands against the wall of the kitchen, and the counter space is taken up with dishes, pans, and boxes of food. 2 I am asked if I still read books and I admit that I do. Reading is not “traditional,” and education has long been suspect in communities that were broken, in part, by that system, but we laugh at my confession because a television set plays in the next room. 3 In the living room there are two single beds. People from reservations, travelers needing help, are frequent guests here. The man who will put together the ceremony I have come to request sits on one, dozing. A girl takes him a plate of food. He eats. He is a man I have respected for many years, for his commitment to the people, for his intelligence, for his spiritual and political involvement in concerns vital to Indian peo- ple and nations. Next to him sits a girl eating potato chips, and from this room we hear the sounds of the freeway. 4 After eating and sitting, it is time for me to talk to him, to tell him why we have come here.
