DRAFT Subject to RCS approval SPECIALITY DOCTOR IN ENT SURGERY LINCOLNSHIRE Date: 10/2019 1 JOB OUTLINE The post-holder will join the team of ENT helping to provide a comprehensive ENT service for the 750,000 strong population of Lincolnshire. This post is currently vacant. Summary of duties: To work as part of the pan-trust ENT Team providing extensive ENT services in the different hospitals within the Trust. It will involve working independently in providing treatment under General & local anaesthesia, new and review patient clinics plus the regular teaching in the department. Participation in the trauma and emergency will be needed and supervision of the junior trainees in the speciality. The post holder must participate in clinical audit; attending all meetings that fall on his/her day at ULHT. The two posts will be based at Lincoln County Hospital and Pilgrim Hospital, Boston but there will be need to travel to the different hospital sites to work. The post holder will be accountable to the Clinical Lead for ENT. THE DEPARTMENT OF ENT The Pan Trust ENT service’s administrative centre is in Lincoln where there is a clinical outpatient department which is adjacent to the other outpatient departments in the hospital supported by audiology with good access to digital imaging support in radiology. Clinical facilities also exist in Pilgrim Hospital’s where there is a dedicated ENT suite supported by Audiology and good nursing, technical and secretarial support available to support the medical team. It includes the Lincoln escarpment on which the beautiful medieval Cathedral stands, the North Lincolnshire Wolds, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, the extensive beaches of the coastal strip, and the vast farmlands in the south and East of the county. Lincoln is a developing city with a recently established and very successful University of Lincoln (UoL) with which the Trust has established strong research links. The Trust has strong links with the University of Nottingham (UoN) and provides clinical teaching for medical students from Nottingham and Leicester. The dental specialities in Lincolnshire have historically worked closely with dental colleagues in Sheffield at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, with colleagues in Leicester and in Nottingham with particular reference to restorative dentistry, Paedodontics and the regional cleft lip and palate service. There are currently provisional plans for a Medical School in Lincoln The city is known for the historic Cathedral, the Lincoln Castle and an original copy of The Magna Carter, as well as the many social and leisure facilities available within this rapidly expanding city and the surrounding countryside. Lincolnshire has retained the grammar school system, and has a reputation for providing excellent state school education. In addition, the cost of housing compares very favourably with many areas of the country. Boston is an attractive market town in South Lincolnshire with a growing population. It has a flourishing port on the River Witham dating back to the thirteenth century. Most of the town’s industry is linked either to agriculture or the port. Grantham is an historic market town with many attractions, including plentiful shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. Grantham Railway station is on the East Coast mainline with very good access to London King’s Cross station – a journey time of 1 hour 15 minutes. Schooling in the area is good with a choice of grammar schools and private schooling available. The towns of Woodhall Spa and Horncastle are set in rural Lincolnshire between Lincoln and Boston. Woodhall Spa is an in-land spa town with an Edwardian character set amongst magnificent pine woods. This resort town is popular with tourists and has two nationally acclaimed golf courses. THE HOSPITALS The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust brought together Lincoln and Louth NHS Trust, Pilgrim Hospital NHS Trust and Grantham and District Hospital NHS Trust. It is responsible for a comprehensive range of health services to a local population of over 750,000 people. Many local general medical and dental practitioners are known personally to the consultant staff and meet at the regular postgraduate meetings. 3 LINCOLN COUNTY HOSPITAL Lincoln County Hospital is situated in the uphill area of the city close to the Cathedral. It is a large purpose built modern District General Hospital, which provides a wide range of specialist clinical services to a catchment population of 450,000. It is part of, and the largest hospital, within the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust. It has a bed complement of 705 beds. An extensive range of services are provided including general surgical, orthopaedic, ENT, ophthalmic, maxillofacial, head and neck cancer services, orthodontics, obstetrics, gynaecological and oncological. In addition general medical and a wide range of medical subspecialty services are provided including Coronary Care and Renal Dialysis and Support units. The hospital has close links with Nottingham and Leicester Medical schools providing undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It has a vibrant postgraduate medical centre providing state of the art IT and educational facilities with an active postgraduate medical education programme. The post-graduate dental education programme makes use of the education centre and hosts approximately 20 continuing education course each year – many of these are “hands on” using the well-equipped skills room. The Intensive Care Unit is part of the Mid-Trent Intensive Care Network and is well equipped and staffed providing a full range of Intensive Care therapies. The Day Care unit is integral to the hospital. Recent developments include an Oncology and Brachytherapy Unit and a combined Medical & Surgical Emergency Admissions Unit. A new Stroke and Rehabilitation Unit opened last year. There is a busy, well-staffed, Accident and Emergency Department. Diagnostic facilities are comprehensive and the large Radiology Department has sophisticated x-ray facilities with modern CT and MRI scanners and investigative radiology services provided. There is also a fully developed Medical Physics Unit and Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory. The maternity service is housed in a separate wing and has ante and post-natal beds, as well as a recently renovated patient care and comfort oriented delivery suite. There is a well-equipped modern Special Care Baby Unit. A full range of supportive services are provided. The hospital is a lively forward looking workplace with a strong identity and held in high regard within its community. It prides itself on providing a high standard of care and attention to the needs of patients and their families. Staff are well motivated and highly valued by management. Management encourage and support the professional development of staff. Medical and nursing staff are active and represented in management throughout the organisation. Medical staff are encouraged to actively participate in management at all levels. Clinical Governance, Clinical Effectiveness, Clinical Audit and Risk Management are actively supported by management. 4 PILGRIM HOSPITAL, BOSTON Pilgrim Hospital is situated on the outskirts of Boston. It is a modern District General Hospital, which was opened in 1977. It has 566 beds. If offers a full range of clinical and laboratory services for Boston and the surrounding area (population 210,000). It has close links with community hospitals in Skegness and Spalding. The hospital has a new Accident and Emergency Department, a Medical Admissions Unit, a combined ITU/HDU/CCU with 12 beds and beds for all the major specialties. There is a first class pathology service and the Radiology Department has both spiral CT and MR scanners. There is also a fully developed Medical Physics Unit. GRANTHAM AND DISTRICT HOSPITAL Grantham and District Hospital is a small district general hospital with 194 beds, offering all major specialties and has close links with Boston, Lincoln and Newark hospitals as well as teaching centres in Nottingham and Leicester. Primarily it serves the people of Grantham, Sleaford and Newark with a total catchment population of around 120,000. The Newark part of the service is within Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust with significant cross-boundary flow. Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust took over responsibility for providing the clinical services at Newark, from April 2003. Grantham provides Integrated Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Anaesthetics and Accident and Emergency services. There is an ambulatory Paediatric service and Midwife Managed Maternity Unit. There is a fully equipped X- Ray Department with a modern CT and MRI scanner, as well as a Pathology Department providing all pathological services on site. There is a Medical Physics Department which does all cardio-respiratory work as well as gamma camera work.
