uietly, bit by bit, I completed this project, and it took me several months. As I pen down these sentences, my mind is in turmoil. A part of me is relieved that Qthe burden of the grueling work of compiling the annual sports magazine is about to be lifted from my shoulders. When I was entrusted with this project, I was ecstatic at first, but the fear of responsibilities became overwhelming with time. There came the point where I was at the brink of giving up because I was afraid that I might fail. That is precisely when I came across this quote by Thomas Edison: “Our weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Talha Iqbal Editor-in-Chief & Designer 03 “Putting together the first-ever issue for a LUMS sports magazine was indeed a very ambitious and challenging initiative, one we hope we do justice to. Our main aim with the magazine is to shine a light on the numerous and continued achievements of the sportspersons from the LUMS community and the SLUMS family. I hope our efforts pay off.” “Sports have always been a prominent part in my family and being part of the team responsible for introducing this magazine to share with the world is both, an honour and one of my most enjoyable experiences. Reading about the events we held and looking back on our year made me realise that despite the hectic workload and back to back events, I wholeheartedly enjoyed it. I loved having something to look forward to each month or the other and I was lucky enough to be working with wonderful people who took it as seriously as I did. I hope seeing this makes you smile as it made me!” “Working on the first-ever SLUMS Magazine has been a humbling experience. Our society hosts more events each year than any other student-run society at LUMS, and the launch of this magazine aims to help in recognition of all that effort. Looking forward to more initiatives like this!” 04 “The Sports at LUMS (SLUMS) society leads all student related sports activities at LUMS in coordination with The Office of Sports, Wellness and Recreation (SWR). SLUMS has a rich history of organizing many exciting intra-university events such as Fall Fest as well as many exceptional inter-university events with 1000+ external participants. As Patron for SLUMS, I enjoy working with the society and commend all the work that the Executive Council, sports reps and team managers put in throughout the year to organize excellent sporting events. LUMS boasts some of the best facilities in the country including an exceptional Sports Complex and a world class aquatic center. SLUMS and SWR are continuously working to improve facilities further to encourage more student involvement. To me, sports is beyond just physical health; it is a great way to bring students together. It teaches values of teamwork, hard-work, persistence and sacrifice. We, SLUMS and SWR, try our best to inculcate these values in our students to train them for the professional world. Sports is also a catalyst for lasting friendships as shown by the strong alumni involvement with our sporting events. Alumni heavily contribute to our sports ecosystem and help us organize events of national importance such as Islamabad United’s visit to LUMS this year for PSL promotions. Sports Magazine is also another excellent initiative by SLUMS which provides a one-stop guide for all major sporting events at LUMS. I appreciate the effort put in by all involved and wish SLUMS all the best for this new venture. ” Dr Hassan Khan Patron SLUMS & Convener LUMS Sports Committee 065 "This initiative is very close to my heart as it has solved one of the biggest problems faced by Sports at LUMS. SLUMS hosts around thirty sports events each year, but our LUMS community has very little knowledge of LUMS' sports activity. We have more than 25 sports teams playing for LUMS, who regularly bring trophies home from tournaments overall Pakistan. Crowd support during home fixtures has decreased over the years. It will allow us to acknowledge LUMS athletes' efforts and achievements and let the community know and get inspired by their stories. My council is proud to have initiated this magazine, and we are thankful to Talha Iqbal (Senior Rep Volleyball) and his team, who worked very hard bringing it to you. God bless Sports At LUMS!" Muhammad Shakeel Bhatti President SLUMS 2019-20 06 “SLUMS, as any member would tell you, is not an easy ride. I learned that from the minute I joined back in my sophomore year as the Junior Rep for Volleyball, it asked me to put my studies on the back burner or sacrifice my social life more often than I would have liked. However, working for this society never felt like work because it soon became my own personal escape from the chaos that is LUMS. SLUMS, with its diverse set of people, frustratingly long hours, and a constant need for attention, took over my LUMS life, and I would not have had it any other way. I was overwhelmed to be appointed as the General Secretary of SLUMS; however, it was only because of the constant support of my incredible General Body that I was able to do justice to this position. This position enabled me to improve our society's dynamics and allowed me to connect with so many incredible personalities, who I came to cherish. As my tenure comes to an end, I would like to say to the future General Secretary; you are responsible for setting the tone of the society, look out for your GB, give them the respect they deserve, be a figure they can look up to and approach. Each one of them will help you fulfill this role to the best of your abilities. Thank you, SLUMS, for teaching me innumerable lessons, helping me achieve all that I had wished for, and more, and being my unwavering support system these past few years. And, thank you to everyone who helped me along my journey! Zainab Salman Anwar General Secretary 2019-2020 07 “It's finally time to move on and say goodbye to the place I used to call home. When I look back to the time when I set foot in this institution as a freshman, I can't help but realize how much this experience has changed me for the better, and SLUMS played a focal role in my development. I officially became part of SLUMS in my sophomore year, mainly because every other society I applied to rejected me in my freshman year. Being an introvert, I didn't think I could survive being a part of SLUMS, but that is the beauty of this society filled with challenges and wonderful people, who always make you push your limits and reach your true potential. Being a part of SLUMS is equivalent to a part-time job while continuing your studies, the latter usually being my second preference. The satisfaction of pulling off an event successfully after months of planning and hard work followed by praises from every attending participant, was far greater for me than getting an A. My dedication and hard work finally paid off after multiple sleepless nights for days in a row when I finally paved my way into the Executive Council of Sports at LUMS. Being appointed as the Vice President Administration is my biggest and proudest achievement to date. I had the opportunity to make SLUMS achieve milestones that I had envisioned for two years, and as a result of the efforts of my fellow council members and me, I can proudly say that we managed to do a pretty decent job. The past year was full of beautiful moments and memories, which I shall cherish forever. I wish this journey didn't have to end so soon, but like every good thing, this journey must also come to an end. Stepping down as Vice President Administration hurts more than graduating. As my tenure comes to an end, I feel proud of the role I played for Sports at LUMS and the love that this society and its beautiful members gave me. My watch has ended, and it's time to pass on the reigns to the subsequent batches, which I'm sure will do justice to their positions and take this society to greater heights. I'm thankful for all the wonderful people I befriended along the way, for the values it instilled in me, and for providing me with the most exhilarating experience of my life thus far. To my fellow society members, it was an honor to serve as your Vice President and I'm content with the fact that the future of SLUMS is in excellent hands. Niaz Mufti Vice President Administration 2019-2020 08 “Being a Management Science major who's passionate about Hockey, my time at SLUMS was a blend between making managerial decisions off the field and making shots on the field. The time I'd surely miss for the rest of my life.” Muhammad Talal Moin Vice President - Training & Development “Hockey to Volleyball to EC, I've managed to tip my toe into a lot of things over the past four years. SLUMS is a type of adrenalin rush that I haven't been able to find elsewhere. It will make you question everything but also push you towards the best of your capabilities. I've accomplished so much that I didn't know was possible; organizing a National event in a week is no piece of cake.
