Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo - Wikipedia Victoria Tennant is the elder daughter of Cecil Tennant and Irina Baronova, the latter so well-known in Australia where she first charmed audiences with her dancing in with the Covent Garden Russian Ballet, and where she also spent her last years in a beautiful house at Byron Bay, New South Wales. Many have never been published previously. Others are informal shots of family and friends. But the informal voice of Baronova is strong. Anyone who met her, however briefly, or saw her speak in public, or teach or coach, will recognise that the words are hers and will be charmed all over again. There are some beautifully insightful moments when Baronova talks about working with various choreographers in different ballets. I was especially taken by her comments on Les Sylphides. Nobody realizes that in Les Sylphides the whole thing is a dialogue between the Sylphides and the invisible creatures of the forest. All the gestures are listening, questioning, whispering back. The whole ballet should be acting and reacting. To do it any other way is not fair to Fokine. I have removed the comment about the name of the ship on which Baronova sailed to Australia. I was wrong. Obituary: Irina Baranova | Stage | The Guardian In the s and '40s, the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo toured the United States and the world, introducing many to ballet as Irina Baronova and the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo art form, while spreading the enduring image of the ballerina as an embodiment of feminine grace and sophistication. Drawing on letters, correspondence, oral histories, and interviews, Baronova's daughter, the actress Victoria Tennant, warmly recounts Baronova's dramatic life, from her earliest aspirations to her grueling time on tour to her later years in Australia as a pioneer of the art. She begins with the Baronov family's flight from Russia during the Revolution, which led them to Romania and later Paris, where at the age of thirteen, Baronova became a star, chosen by the legendary George Balanchine to join the Ballets Russes, where she danced the lead in Swan Lake. Tennant provides an intimate account of Baronova's life as a dancer and rare behind-the-scenes stories of life on the road with the stars of the company. Spectacular photographs, a mix of archival images and family snapshots, offer many rare views of rehearsals, costumes, set designs, and the dancers themselves both at their most dazzling and in their most everyday. The story of Irina Baronova is also the story of the rise of ballet in America thanks to the Ballets Russes, who brought the magisterial beauty and star power of dance to big cities and small towns alike. There were a lot of interesting photos, but I thought it was cheating to cull so much text from Irina Baronova's existing memoir which I already possessed. It was sold on 'new and personal' insights into her life, but actually there weren't any. Report abuse. Thank you Vicky. I was lucky enough to be taught by Irina Baronova, she was one of those inspirational teachers that you never forget. I knew her already because I was in the same class at school as Victoria Tennant, so this was a very personal and special buy. I teach dance history, so as a record of an extraordinary era it is of tremendous value, and complements her own autobiography and the Ballets Russes DVD. Helping to bring to life that amazing time. Thank you Vicky!! One person found this helpful. This is a wonderful portrait of a woman and a view of both an era and the world of ballet when America knew almost nothing about this art form. Perhaps the best thing I can say is that I have little interest in Irina Baronova and the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo ballet itself AND I still found the book fascinating. It gives the reader a wonderful insider's view of a very special world, not just the intense hot-house world of dancers and choreographers, but also the artists, writers and the many emigrees from Czarist Russia for whom the ballet became the center of their lives. But you also gain enormous respect for an artist who was also a mother, from the viewpoint of one of her daughters, who just so happened to go on to become a distinguished actress. The pictures are sumptuous and the writing fluid and charming. This is that rare combination of a "page-turner" that is also a gorgeous coffee-table book. This is a beautiful book. Wonderful photographs printed on luscious paper. A real book with weight and feeling. The kind of book you can get lost in and return to time and time again. Worth every penny. It is expensive. A must for all balletomanes. Baronova's life was extraordinary, as the treasure trove of photographs attests. My only quibble and it's a small one was too much text from her autobiography being repurposed here. However, her beautiful spirit shines through, thanks to the devoted work of her daughter.
