BURKE, F.S.C., Ph.D m President, La Salle University Joseph F. Burke, F.S.C., Ph.D., became La Salle University's 27th president on July 1, 1992. He had served as provost of the university since 1990. Born in Philadelphia in 1945, Brother Burke is the first La Salle alumnus to head the 131-year-old university. He has been a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the lay teaching order that conducts the university, since 1 963. Brother Burke, who holds the academic rank of professor of psychology, originally served at La Salle from 1973 to 1986 as a faculty member, chairman of the Psychology Department, and president of the Faculty Senate for two terms. During that time, he also initiated the university's graduate program in Human Services Psychology and was named a recipient of the Christian and Mary Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. After serving as an American Council of Education Fellow at the University of Hartford for the 1986-87 academic year, Brother Burke was appointed dean of the College of Basic Studies and special assistant to the president of the University of Hartford.
