Chess World Pty. Ltd. (Incorporating Chess Kids) ACN 087 995 364 Volume 2 Issue 2 Editor: David Cordover March 2000 Editorial While there were a lot of juniors playing at the Ballarat Open none of them really performed at the top level. The highest rated junior was seeded 25th. In the good old days (now I feel old) juniors would be vying for the top spots. Many is a time that I have played in Ballarat when a junior would win the tourna- ment, or at least finish in the real prize money (not a ratings prize). So what is the problem? I blame coaching. The proliferation of chess coaching has destroyed the strength of junior players. While coach- ing is fantastic for encouraging more juniors to play as yet it has been ineffec- tive at producing any good players. The good players are those with either natu- ral talent, superb dedication and often a bit of both. Sam Chow, David Cordover, Garry Kasparov & Channel 9 News.
