Effects of Vibration on Concrete Mixtures

Effects of Vibration on Concrete Mixtures Yifeng Ling, PhD Research Associate, CP Tech Center With thanks to Dr Peter Taylor and Paul Jaworski Thixotropy A property of concrete to: • Flow under vibration • Stand up when stationary 2 Why does concrete need vibration? • Remove entrapped air • Assist with levelling 3 What Is Happening under Vibration? Acceleration >2g Water moves allows air to float horizontally up and out (Uplift > viscosity) Solids wobble And maybe Shaft oscillates in a rotate circle sending out compression waves 4 What Is Happening under Vibration? Assumed that bubble Density size affected is influenced by: • G-force (energy) Bubble • Time Friction & Viscosity Acceleration >2g allows air to float up and out (Uplift > viscosity) 5 What Is Happening under Vibration? Energy affected by: • Amplitude (same in most devices ~0.075”) • Frequency Acceleration • Mass of vibrator >2g allows air to weight float up and out Relationships are not understood 6 What Is Happening under Vibration? More frequency = more water Not quantified Water moves horizontally 7 What Is Happening under Vibration? Not quantified May not move back after vibrator removed Solids wobble And maybe rotate 8 What Is Happening under Vibration? Radius of influence: • Amplitude • Frequency Too far • Mixture: • Water content • Workability Too close • Linear / logarithmic / other? • Assumed to be about 8” 9 What is a good vibration? • No segregation • No entrapped air • Retain entrained air • No water movement 10 How much is enough? • Rules of thumb (3 s/cu ft) • Watch for bubbles… • Listen to the sound… 11 Controlling Frequency • Traditional vibrators change frequency under load • CFV Systems now available Vibrator Speeds by Brand Unit/2HP-1.5 Iinch-10 feet Brand No Load High Slump Low Slump A 17,200 16,000 13,400 B 14,500 14,500 13,500 C 14,000 13,500 13,100 D 12,200 11,700 11,200 E 11,600 11,100 10,500 12 Thomas Reading Frequency Matters • Vibrators in the right spot move cream to the surface • Loss of air • Water movement 13 Effect of Frequency on Air 14 Air loss and segregation • Aggregate segregation • Poor air in vibrator track High frequency leaves track 15 Air loss and segregation • Unworkable concrete • Beaten into place • Distress observed after 5 years • Strength was fine! 16 Effect of Frequency on Water Movement 12,000 vpm 8,000 and 10,000 vpm 17 Water Movement 18 Air loss and segregation • Paver speed matters - some 19 How to evaluate vibration? Accelerometer Vibration analyzer • Vibration energy (RMS velocity amplitude, in/s) at a specific time period across the relevant frequencies 20 Therefore We need to understand • The relationship between vibration energy and • Air movement • Water movement • Aggregate movement • As a function of mixture • Water content • PSD • Workability • Thixotropy 21 Evaluating energy transfer Steel rod diameter: 0.5” Diameter of vibrator head: 0.9” Vibrator Vibrator 2” Vibration Magnet Steel wire 1.25” 17” 13” 0.5” Steel rods 2” 2” Rod 4” 2” 6” 3” Sensors 3” 3” 3” 3” 3” 15” 22 Vibration energy for different mixtures 0.4 0.4 3 in 3 in 6 in 6 in 9 in 0.3 9 in 0.3 0.2 0.2 0.1 0.1 Vibration energy, in/s Vibration energy, in/s 0 0 0 20 40 60 80 100 0 20 40 60 80 100 Time, s Time, s Slump: 1” Slump: 4” • Lower slump: less energy, more time to reach stability • Longer distance: less energy 23 Hypothesis Vibrator Vibrator Unconsolidated Vibrating Consolidated Loose Densifying Dense Absorbing Energy More energy absorbed 24 Hypothesis Energy Absorbed energy Total energy Measured energy Time 25 Next Steps Vary: • AEA dose • WRA dose • Aggregate type, shape and content Measure • Air void systems at different distances • Evidence of water movement • Energy transferred 26 Make concrete great again! www.cptechcenter.org.
