Mr. lonatana had a long and distinguished career serving his country. I was privileged to meet with Mr. lonatana when he was in New York for Tuvalu's admission to the United Nations in September 2000 and I was impressed by his statesmanship and wholehearted commitment to the universal principles and goals of the Organisation. Mr. lonatana will be remembered for his great contribution to safeguarding his country's interests and promoting the well-being of his people. Cabinet consists of the Prime Minister, elected by a majority of the members of parliament, and up to four ministers. There are no organised political parties; MPs have very close links with their island constituencies and effort is directed towards balancing island representation in Cabinet.
